Well that was a surprisingly small amount of code that pretty much worked perfectly first try. http://shipbrook.net/jeff/sb.html is a terse AdLib reference but it lays out exactly how to perform the necessary delays for writing values and a simple series of register writes for making a noise so you know you've got it right.

Like, I _could_ use an existing tracker, but I'd just have to write a loader and a player anyway, and that's way more boring than building a weird tool that might be an acceptable way to write music and would definitely help me interactively debug my sound driver

Today I implemented tile walkability and looping sprite animations. Note that the guy can go places the car can’t.

It is spooky to me how quickly this has started coming together after two months of tech fiddling. It... paid off? I’m not used to this.

The thing that will kill me about working this way isn’t the memory limitations or x86 quirks, it’s that NeoPaint does not support cut/paste while zoomed in and I have to manipulate exact 16x16 pixel squares with an oversensitive trackball

Implemented CREATE/DOES> in Jorth, which I consider a personal milestone because it was a significant bit of metaprogramming magic I consciously tried and failed to wrap my head around the first time I learned Forth.

It’s, like, 4 lines of Forth and 4 lines of C? There’s not much going on. At the time I thought it was Deep Magick but it’s really just another way for Forth to make its compiled code smaller by factoring out repetition.
