Heh, AndStatus seems to be working fine on this device and instance!
Now I'm off to start looking for a desktop program that handles more than 140char in the command line
-
@rugk true, seems like most people of the bottom of my list don't even post anymore. Well, seems to be the way of the fediverse then. Adapt, evolve and migrate as needed.
And btw, props for the big guys in the beginning for bearing the brunt and the load of newcomers before the space diversified with new servers. The Quitters, loadaverage, vinilox, etc... no wonder so many got overloaded and closed, with so many newcomers directed straight at them
-
@rugk actually, lack of follower base (over 200 people at my quitter account) that makes my interactions in the fediverse much lower and less interesting, and lack of a browserless client (I used #IdentiCurse, but it glitches out when posting more than 140c)
I'm completely agnostic to whether it's mastodon or whatever. The posting must go on, though.

I set up #OMEMO accross all my close family yesterday using the #Conversations app and #Gajim on the desktop. Bottom line, not too bad.
They were impressed by how easy and similar to mainstream messengers like WhatsApp it is, but I think they missed (and still miss) the main point: FREEDOM for communications through decentralization and cryptography.

@rugk quitter.se is very unstable these days... I'm trying to rebuild my account here, but it just doesn't seem like the same thing. You can start following me here too, though!

Sweet, #I2Pd is included in the Ubuntu repos in 18.04! !privacy #I2P

I don't understand why some XMPP clients are phasing out #OTR from their #encryption modes, yet still provide #PGP despite the fact that it doesn't implement forward secrecy.
Have we decided that multiple device messaging is a greater priority than security against offline captured message analysis? Also, don't forget that most XMPP clients still only offer OTR as encryption capability.
I'm looking at you, #Conversations.
-
#Gajim 1.0.1 released on Ubuntu 18.04 looks great and feels great. End-to-end #encryption is slick with #OMEMO plugin built right into a native package, and the interoperability with phone-based #Conversations is smooth.
I think that now I have my answer as to what I'll propose to my family as an alternative to #WhatsApp from now on.

@rugk@gnusocial.de Mozilla #Thunderbird with #Enigmail extension

@mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se hardest part IMO wasn't even the interface or software stack (I used the same as yours minus Tails) but the lack of appreciation on why each component on the stack is necessary. Some responses sounded like "why do you need to install so many things? Other apps just work ootb." And they have a point in this case: whenever I show people encrypted XMPP, it abstracts so much that people don't even think about it.
-
Today I had a firsthand experience on teaching someone how to use encrypted email. TL;DR: #PGP is in a horrible state of usability, yet this should not stop you from teaching other people about the principles of !privacy and security.

Oops, I think I forgot to mention you, @cachorro

For some reason I wasn't alerted for this thread. Even after I refreshed the mentions timeline. #AndStatus error maybe? Anyway, hello there, doggie! Welcome to the !fediverse.
The reason I followed you back immediately here is because I have it set up to follow back anyone that follows me, like a bot, because I don't check this account very often. Matter of fact, I post here mainly when I want to longpost or describe in detail something that @kzimmermann can't do in just 140c.
Actually, not many accounts will behave this way, though, as it's not the default, and there's even an option *not* to be followed at all (probably to avoid problems with stalking, I guess?) So do not worry, most people will probably not be autofollowing you back if you find that annoying.
Hope that clears it up!

@goffi thanks, I should look into a server that can handle these (or make sure mine has implemented these XEPs).
On another notice, wouldn't XMPP Carbons basically be useless if you use encryption? Since you have different session keys

@muppeth oh good to see you guys use prosody too
