@dtluna But we're talking about a big instance here, and people join them for a whole host of reasons. Perhaps ending up in an instance that doesn't quite fit how they are. You've just said that you'd give up getting to know them if it meant not knowing bad people on that instance... you've just blocked your chance for the real interaction you crave in this example. I would say that it is worth leaving that option open. You can always block the individuals you find repulsive on a personal level, and leave yourself open to the widest chance of meeting somebody of substance. But then I would also argue that there can be some value in the people that just shitpost... if they are open to you as well. If not, then it is a lesson on how not to be or how to conduct yourself in the future if there are any issues there. It's about what you get out of it, what you make of it. Or you can just ignore them without blocking the good from your life. There is plenty of bad in the world, so don't block the good from your life where you have the power to decide.

@ayy This is true. Perhaps people are not just one thing but many things, and have the potential to become that. Even what they seek to be like.

@dtluna How sad that you brush it off like that. I recall that you were persistent and passionate about it in the past. Even as far as helping me to set it up. But now I wonder how much you care about it as you distance yourself. Maybe you can live with it, but didn't it matter back then? Isn't there a spark? I am still glad for what you did back then even though I don't say it as much.

I have to wonder... it feels like you use rudeness or edginess, or distance as a shield... but don't you crave real interaction? Someone who can break through that defence and interact with you on a deeper level? Provide you with the argument you seek rather than insults and defensiveness? Isn't it something you can do yourself?

I don't think you have to be open to getting to know everyone you come across online, but it is a risk worth taking every now and then. It may surprise you. Block, and you won't find the people worth it. If you believe they are rare then don't kill any chance you have to interact with them. Be as open as you can so they will be free to share in that interaction.

@dtluna I doubt that I would go out of my way to interact with them but the fediverse makes it easier for us to interact without going out of our way. We will probably be attracted to the posts we make, and the people I find repellent will be repelled more often than not. The fediverse makes it easier so that you don't have to completely exclude the good from the bad in your opinion. In fact, I probably rarely interact with people I'm not keen on and find myself surprised at what I find in others that started out as strangers.

Even what I have known of you, I would say that had I allowed your edginess in the beginning to mean blocking you, then perhaps the two of us might be poorer for having little to no interaction. Would I be using manjaro if it weren't for your persistent and help, for instance? Probably not.

People are much more than the edgy surface posts they make on social media. Judge based solely on that, and you miss out on how interesting they are as people.

@dtluna @debbie But it could be a big deal because it only takes one person to help you develop and grow, to provide you with social needs you might have. To stimulate your brain with debates. To alter your life. If blocking out the bad means blocking out the good, then you potentially lose out in this deal. Especially when it comes to learning in life. And who knows? They might benefit from having you in their lives just as you benefit from them. If you can avoid harming your chances of talking to better people, why wouldn't you take it?

@dtluna Well, the bigger we get then the more likely they are to get bored and turn their attention to someone more entertaining. This is exactly what happened to me on twitter, and even on here. I've been in a few spats, and then they passed and those involved moved on. Then again, perhaps you are more entertaining to bother than I am so they don't get as bored.

@dtluna @rationalreview If you want to know, I don't like the culture it brought in. It's like blocklists... you end up tarring a bunch of people, most you don't know, with the same brush... it's very easy to dismiss people when you don't know them and use whatever pet word bothers you to dismiss them. It's frustrating to be mislabelled but that is the nature of the beast. It's better to look at individuals rather than collectivising everyone on an instance and blocking the instance because of the loud few you've been exposed to. You also end up missing out, and it makes communication more frustrating between instances (I haven't been able to help people I've wanted to because they don't see my posts). The only time I have some sympathy is related to legal issues... for everything else, I think you can just block a user that annoys you without resorting to blocking an entire instance. Or better still, just ignore people. They soon get bored and move on. Or just say their piece and get it out there before forgetting it happened.

@dtluna Well... is it much different to what you say to begin with? The amount of times you've said faggot or similar in the past escapes me during arguments. It just seems weird for me to see you take this direction over tactics you've used before. Even being edgy and saying stupid shit.

@dtluna But I thought you liked arguing with people over fedi? Who will you find to argue with if you block entire instances?

@augustus I guess that is a good approach to it. Can't say I'm a big fan of all the extras... but sometimes it is interesting to learn more about.

@augustus I think it is good to remember... but at the same time it does feel overrated to me. I can't get into the 2 minutes silence stuff and all that comes with it. The world wars have shaped our lives in ways I can't fathom, and yet it feels like a massive waste that we got into the wars... men have died in battles throughout history and still do, alas.
