    @laura Hell yes.

I've long felt that one feminism's biggest failings (or just unfinished tasks), is that it hasn't made enough progress increasing the respect and prestige associated with traditional "women's work."

I think that's a big part of why carers and educators all over the West are are routinely underpaid.

Judging everything by the metrics of the patriarchy results in all sorts of shitty outcomes.

I've published a Progress Report on the #Mailpile blog: https://www.mailpile.is/blog/2018-10-27_Progress_Report.html

If you want a big-picture overview of the current state of the project, that's where to go!

Today I found another sneaky, stupid bug in #Mailpile 's IMAP!

Something is, on restart, wiping the bit of config that tells the IMAP mail source to go looking for new folders. So it, on average, never does after the initial setup.

This bug was very sneaky. It should be easy to fix though.

I'm seeing more and more tweets and blog posts about #Mailpile.

I think we finally crossed a usability threshold, where folks are successfully installing the app and giving it a try.

Embarrassing bugs are being found in the process, but that's the name of the game, right! I'm happy with this.

Tired and sad feel so similar.

I thought I was sad, was gloomily pondering what I need to change in my life to not be sad.

Then I remembered that I only got 4 hours of sleep last night. Oh. Duh.

I've stopped carrying my laptop everywhere, unless I plan to work. Otherwise I just leave it plugged in on my desk.

Instead, I carry a very light bluetooth keyboard and my Moto G5 phone. The laptop exposes SSH and Mailpile over PageKite, and I've got Termux on my phone... it's not quite comfy enough for coding, but when I need to do some quick e-mailing or emergency admining, this is quite adequate.

My laptop has effectively become my personal "cloud server."

Which I think is pretty cool.

Yesterday's Ubuntu upgrade was a close call.

I made the mistake of closing my laptop lid while the upgrade was in progress, triggering the lock screen... which refused to unlock because the system was in an inconsistent state.

I got back in through SSH over PageKite (using Termux on my phone), and manually finished the upgrade by rebooting and running apt and dpkg by hand.

The fact that I could salvage it is kinda cool... but that was some serious hoop jumping.

If you want to compete with Google or Facebook or other big companies, you need to understand that a) they are actually constrained by the law and b) the only computer bigger than their computer, is "everybody else's computer."

Radical decentralization + build software that has features the companies cannot offer for legal reasons.

We just have to be willing to go where the big companies can't. The more censorship there is of "normal" content, the more opportunities there are to do just that.

Although I love and appreciate my friends who fight in the political sphere...

Part of me thinks a) we can't win and b) the censorship, the filtering, the copyright, the moral panics - all will ultimately work to our favour.

By "our", I mean us folks who care about decentralization, free software and less corporate ways to exist online.

The more constraints the law puts on Internet businesses, the more compelling the law-ignoring DIY alternatives become.

Bad laws are for breaking. ✊

I scratched my itch: #Mailpile 's GitHub now includes a plugin named 'unthread' that lets the user:

    a) Move a message (and any replies) to a new thread

    b) Change the search-result-subject of the new thread (affecting search result displays and reply templates).

    It's pretty sweet.

I'm realizing that I've lately been failing at not "correcting" people who are "wrong on the Internet."

In particular on the subject of Google.

I tend to dislike polarization wherever I see it. With a few exceptions, I think it does more harm than good.

It bugged me when fanboys assumed Google could do no wrong, and now I'm just as annoyed people assume everything they do is malicious and evil.

But people have their opinions, their reasons. Good or bad.

I should probably just STFU. 🔇

So it appears Youtube wanting to get paid for hosting peoples' video content is exploitation now?

People are so used to getting things for free, they think they're entitled. Reality check time!

Yeah, yeah, Google is evil, blah blah fucking blah. Sure they could have done it differently, I'm sure random Internet complainers know the business details way better than the YT staff. Obviously.

So by all means, host it yourself - and pay the bandwidth bills. Meh.

    @maloki No, it doesn't matter.

One of the most fundamental problems with social media and harassment and the pain it causes, is that one person can easily become the flash-point of a mob's aggression.

Whether each individual in the mob actually has justifications for his or her grievances is completely irrelevant. Mob justice is never reasonable.

When people become the target of a mob, the only self care that works is to stop listening. Sound familiar? Yeah.

May as well drop a bomb right before going to bed.

I'm sure @Gargron, as a young, inexperienced developer, has made a ton of mistakes running Mastodon. Young humans do that.

Eugen is a person. A lot of people claiming to worry about "social media harassment" seem worryingly oblivious to that as they dogpile and heap on the negativity.

You're entitled to your frustration, but don't be the problem you claim to want to solve.

Keep it positive? #ForkOffTogether and make things better?

... this may be me "overfitting", but:

Humanity is progressing. We are getting very good at optimizing things! By default we tend to optimize for price/profit, which often boils down to optimizing for efficiency. 🤓

So; we risk squeezing the reliability out of our real life systems and networks - businesses, society.

IMO, our ability to measure society has weirdly not kept up with our ability to optimize it.

From fake news to market crashes... by this rule of thumb, predictable outcomes? 🤔
