@switchingsocial@mastodon.at @ak Thing is, OSM has better cycle infrastructure data than Google, and the offline map pack helps a lot when I'm in rural Somerset with no signal and no WiFi.

I find zooming out will eventually give me the name I'm looking for. The map has the data but doesn't display it at certain zoom distances.

@switchingsocial@mastodon.at @ak I have never used Qwanf (to my knowledge), but I do have this problem using Cyclestreets, which uses OSM data.

It's OK if I know the area where I am, but often that's not what maps are for...

@ak I think you should keep using it, and also think about ways to counter the celebrity culture that gives so much credit to those people. Torvalds may have started things rolling, but any modern Linux distribution is the work of many, many more developers. Similarly, Stallman may have been an important voice arguing for free software, but that would mean nothing without all the people who write it.

Hey, I have a blind friend who might want to join us on the Fediverse. Does anyone have a guide to accessibility etc that might be more useful than me just sending her a link to an instance?

I'm #urbansketching and this is a park on the hills close to Prague Metronome. On the sketch are tourists using their phones sitting or standing on a low wall and behind and below them the city of Prague.

Dutch tourists came by and said "leuk, toch " about my sketch

I'm looking to make a few changes as I prepare for a potential transition.

One of the things I want to change is my identity here on the fediverse. I have a new name in mind, and I'd like to get rid of the picture of the TV mast and have a picture of me that reflects my gender identity in a way that a photograph right now wouldn't.

To that end, I'd like to commission someone to do a profile picture for me. Does anyone have any recommendations? Boosts are fine.

    @letthewatersroar No, it's still useful!

All I have had from other composers is "grant applications" which is... probably not something I'm suited to, tbh.

I know I ask about this sort of thing fairly frequently.

I think it's important for creative people (artists, musicians, whatever) to talk about how they engage with crapitalism, what works, what doesn't, and why.

If we *don't* talk about it openly, the only people who do will be the "marketing experts" who sell more marketing courses than artworks. I don't trust them.

Artists who take commissions with a value of £500 or more GBP, how do you get those commissions?

NB there is nothing wrong with lots of small-value commissions if that works for you, but it *doesn't* work for me, so, I'm interested in how other models work.

@artsyhonker a huge problem i've been having with my patreon is over promising art and under delivering. I've had to dial back on my reward tiers several times and I still feel like I'm overdoing it.

If you crowdfund your art/music/etc and you work in a niche that isn't very popular, or where each new work has a long lead-time, or both:

What works well for you? Why?

What doesn't work so well? Why?

What's one thing you could improve? What do you need for that to happen?
