@johnrandom @denikombucha She's my congresswoman, too, and I live in the "great" state of Kentucky.

I have three more congresswomen. They are Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib.

Maybe, just maybe we're finally on the path to becoming kinda decent.

@clacke Maybe my questions are different. I ask questions that make them code in speech.

Maybe it's that I'm mostly interviewing COBOL programmers.

I feel like I'm doing something wrong in that I've only backed on crowd funded project and I didn't receive it. The Chip computer.

@clacke Something happened to me today that made me wonder about taking the type of coding test you describe.

That is a coworker asked me to help him at his desk rather than over a remote application.

It was tough because the environment didn't have my keyboard customizations. In my case on the mainframe this means that important keys like enter behave differently than they do for me normally.

@clacke On the other hand, I'm completely onboard with paid coding tests. So long as you sign agreements that you will not own them, give copies to the candidate, will not sell them or share them with 3rd parties, and will destroy them in a timely fashion after they've been evaluated.

@clacke Why do you think it's "just guessing"? Do you mean to tell me you can't ask questions to ascertain someone's coding ability? That's what I can't imagine.

I can ask questions that will tell me if the candidate understands things and move on rather than waiting on coding. Seems so inefficient to me.

That's your fantasy to abuse the person's time by having them sit in unpaid planning sessions? Or do you plan to pay for their time?

@clacke Maybe there's something in the platform. I can ask several questions and access someone's mainframe coding skills.

I guess I'm struggling with the idea that someone could grade my code but not be able to grade my conversation on code.

I can't imagine discussing code with someone and not knowing how they code. I discuss issues like this at least once most weeks with someone I don't know and I'm almost never surprised when I looked at their code.

Just saw another 'liberal' person mock someone's appearance.

Unacceptable. Fortunately, I'm seeing this more by pundits and less by candidates themselves.

@clacke Ok. I found the sentences that remind me of why I find it unacceptable. If fit into the latter category quoted below.

"For those who administer coding tests, please reconsider what you’re doing. For junior developers, they’re fabulous tools. But for anyone who has a body of code samples all ready to go, ask for one. Ask a few technical questions that require code in an interview. And make your decision based on how they think, how they learn, and how competent they are."

@clacke Interesting again in that I see coding assignments as proxies for interviews. I suppose they could be extensions to good interviews, but I'd still end the interview.

I suppose I'd end at least a couple before I did some research to see if the practice somehow became acceptable and I just missed the bus.

The good news is you won't be stealing any of my jobs!!!

@clacke I find it interesting, you haven't had questions in interviews that suss that out.

Actually, when I'm talking to someone about how to code something or solve a problem my go to technique is to discuss it first without a computer being available. I'm most concerned about how someone understands a thing between the ears.

@clacke To your point, if an interviewer wants to know if I know how to create a linked list, he can ask me.

Moreover, if they can't muster the people who are skilled enough to know how to ask those kinds of questions, it's probable they aren't good enough for me to work for.

@clacke I still wouldn't allow it. Been 12 years since I've applied for a job, but if code assignments or coding tests are part of the interview, I'm out.

@clacke Interesting. If the interviewer requires me to code rather than go from my resume and interview questions, i end the interview. i find that absolutely unacceptable.

it would be a step beyond unacceptable if i had to install something or asked to use a website that requires no ad/cookie blockers.

i'd have to be hungry to allow either.
