@luisroca That's a very good book! I actually reviewed it for the Newsletter of the LMS a few years ago!

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but there's a pretty good formula for determining how fast you could run some distance (with appropriate training) given how fast you can run some other distance:

t2 = t1*((d2/d1)^1.06)

where d2 is distance you want to run, d1 is a distance you already ran, t1 is the time you ran it in, and t2 is the time you should expect.

It's remarkably accurate (for me at least) for distances over 2-3 km.

@luisroca the Matlab is pretty optional: while it's an introduction geared towards people interested in applications, it's still a theory-focussed book rather than a walk-you-through-implementations thing. It's just theory presented in such a way as to be useful for common real-world applications (as opposed to the way I learned it, from Lang, which was first by giving the axioms of an abstract field, then the axioms of an abstract vector space, then everything done in elegant isolation).

@luisroca ah yeah, Strang’s your boy then. Crystal clear and rigorous without heavy abstraction.

@robertwgehl Something on actual number of users would be nice. Like, how many accounts are "active" (say, posted in the last 3 months), how many users have alt-accounts, &c.

@luisroca Strang, Introduction to Linear Algebra (now in 5ed) is probably the best if you're eventually interested in applications outside pure maths. There are video lectures too:

@asonix I’m in the sort of weird situation where all the abstract category theory monoid/monad stuff is second nature to me but I have no real idea how to connect it to programming practice. Would be good to try to make sense if it

@asonix huh never something I’d considered, I’ll give it a try I guess. I’ve played around with Haskell a fair bit but never enough to really program with it, would be good to have an excuse to get back into it

@asonix does learning abstract programming stuff from podcasts work? I’ve always found having other people explain maths stuff to me works pretty well, but always with a blackboard or paper. Somehow I can’t imagine it purely auditory
