Return from the Stars by Lem is some good shit. I don't know if the Inheritors by William Golding is alternate history or speculative history, but it's bleak and good

@Jessicacrets I guess I'm just suspicious of how much I enjoyed watching it, it shouldn't be this much fun.
The charitable reading is that he's using humour and coolness to make a mortality story palatable to a mass audience; the cynical view is that he's having fun telling a story about extremely cool (by society's standards) people, since we know deep down we shouldn't valourise these people, he's using the morality story to cover his own ass while still making a fun film about ballers

@Jessicacrets I was back and forth on this until i found out that the guy who introduces him as a motivational speaker at the end is the real Jordan Belfont in a cameo. Also, the decision to have a rescue plane explode and top pay no attention at all to people dying, save to motivate J Belfont's moral arc was pretty grotesque

@Jessicacrets To be honest I thought it was quite a cynical movie. It was pretty clearly criticising its subjects, but it also went out of its way to make them appear cool and better than others; it was trying to have its cake and eat it too
