Sure, empathy's great and all, but it's not the answer to everything. For example, there are people who will actively soak up all the good feelings and loving cuddles offered to them and then explode like claymore mines when the constant affirmation supply lets up at all.

Or, to put it another way: some damaged people spoil it for everyone else, and they need less affirmation and more doses of cold reality until they learn to cope.

@verius What in particular did you dislike about Ada? The strict syntax?

@zaitcev My favourite for that is erlang. Mostly because it doesn't get any icky OOP in my FP.

But if you really want, you could dump the DB and back that up.

@utzer You should be able to just temporarily flush and quiesce your MySQL instance, and then do your snapshot. That way you should have a consistent drive image.

@zaitcev I don't know for sure, but I would guess that their public relations departments were trying to make a trendy statement. I agree that it's tacky.

On the other, the businesses are caught in a dilemma: they need more diversity hires so that angry activists won't shred them, and they can't get them unless educational institutions credential them.

They're just playing the part that the outrage merchants force them into.

@denikombucha What if someone wants to use the traditional definition of racism, as prejudice based in race? That's still the dictionary definition. Do you just ... I don't know ... hate them for their definition?

I mean, they could turn around and just as you tell them to "Stop acting like ... etc. etc.", tell you to "Stop redefining dictionary words because you're confusing rather than assisting the dialectic."

Maybe you need a new word. Maybe "Ultracist."
