He does declare that this is part of a plan to prove the Earth is flat. He justifies it with a lot of Biblical & conspiracy theory nonsense. He is a True Believer.

@DrAndrewThaler Unfortunately, corporate sponsors aren't going to be enthused about a marketing gimmick that was likely to get someone killed. So he went to the gullible people who didn't care.

@DrAndrewThaler Hmm. If Answers in Genesis offered me a big grant if only I would put a big banner saying, "THE EARTH IS 6000 YEARS OLD" on my blog, I wouldn't do it. I think that advertising a wrong idea IS a con.

My opinion of Hughes is that he is ignorant enough to think "flat earth" isn't something that taints his credibility, and he wanted money for his gimmicky stunt.
