Looks like they're finally sunsetting gender! They just posted the date, and good news folks: we've got most of a year to find other identity frameworks to migrate to! :blobuwu:
The fediverse seems eager to soapbox about the dangers of federation with these folks, but isn't willing to follow that line of thinking to its obvious end conclusion.
If anyone who complies with FBI demands is in effect a fed, wouldn't that mean all the FBI has to do to cripple and destroy a fediverse node is to make a data request of that node?
My summary understanding of the discourse thus far: Hackers.town is run by someone who's in the infosec profession and has had to comply with FBI information requests in the past, and I guess made a really shitty joke in reference to this fact as part of a presentation? The fediverse has taken this to mean that they're an FBI informant as a result. https://hackers.town/@thegibson/101694354135726418
Many companies have been founded and failed on the premise of making Linux into a desktop operating system. Why? Because the various packages needed to build a desktop OS are designed for servers, not desktops. Drivers are buggy or missing, because hardware manufacturers know there's no money in Linux. Applications aren't as polished.
Capitalism is your problem here. The issues with the FOSS community could be solved and we'd still face this problem.
So here's where I take issue with your anger, Mona -- You're trying to hold the entire FOSS community as accountable for the failings of the very model that makes them unique.
There's no central control here that can force these individual projects to march in line.
Yes, the community exists to serve its own needs, because the general public giving them feedback like yours understandably makes all of them want to turn their backs on them.
Linux as a collection of FOSS projects is presently failing and stagnant in many areas the general public considers to be essential to an operating system.
Those failures and corresponding stagnations can be largely attributed to the FOSS community's culture of "If you don't like what I did, make something better," specifically presented as a common response to requests for features or improvements with which the project owner disagrees.
The original asshole techbro Linus Torvalds (Creator of the Linux kernel and Git), has taken his first public steps toward fostering inclusivity and compassion.
You may have seen the article going around from "Dog With Dice" about how the latest version of White Wolf's "Vampire: The Masquerade" was specifically written for and marketed to the alt-right.
The article author's whole site is now dead and their Twitter account has been deleted without explanation.
I suspect foul play and severe harassment from alt-right 4channers.
"A little advice I wanted to offer to you given what I'm sure must be a lot of slowly building stress regarding the projects that folks are dragging you into here:
The psychological definition of stress is the failure to objectify responsibility.
I mention this here because working as a developer for a non-technical company means being an afterthought a lot of the time. Folks don't seem to understand that what we do is challenging and takes time."
#MastoAdmins - I could use some advice! I changed the name and username of my instance's database when I moved to my new server, and now emails aren't going out. I'm seeing this error in the console:
"ActiveJob::DeserializationError: Error while trying to deserialize arguments: Couldn't find Notification"
No emails are going out as a result of this error, inclusive of Follow requests, Notifications and New User activations.
I suspect a DB config issue, but everything else works? Help! D:
