    @freakazoid I'd say inflation is good because it reduces the value of inherited wealth. If you don't do something productive with it, it decays.

    Doesn't completely solve the problem, but is at least some force against it.

    I don't think inflation hurts working class people as long as minimum wage is tied to it (which it should be). The problem comes if the minimum wage is stagnant (which is stupid and harmful).

    @switchingsocial Mycroft is centralized by default, but you can setup your own backend. It is Open Source. I talked to the CEO some and he is keen on building a backend that you can have in your own home and owned by you. It is on their roadmap, but not yet complete (it is after the Mark II).

    So while centralized today by default, hopefully not forever.

    @Are0h I think that it is unlikely to be non-corporate, even people who are self-hosting are usually using a cloud host or other provider.

    But, I do think cloud hosting is set to become more and more end-user friendly. So setting up my own fileserver will be about the same complexity as signing up for a Dropbox account.

    That's where federation comes in. If the individual instances can't work together, you use lose the network effect of larger enterprises. Working together needs to be easy too.

    @lufthans I also object to your referring to Ubuntu Phone as "Canonical NIHware." To date, I think it is the only Open Source mobile UI running on GNU/Linux that has made it to production.

    @lufthans it started as a project to support additional hardware that Canonical wasn't interested in. They were porting to devices that were shipping Android. When Canonical decided to not invest in Ubuntu Phone anymore they expanded their scope, but the project was doing similar stuff already.

    Currently they're transitioning over to 16.04 so things aren't clean. Probably not worth making a serious evaluation until that is complete.

    @lufthans Ubports existed as its own project before Canonical canceled its involvement in everything. They said they'd continue almost immediately after.

    Not surprised at things not working well on the Dell, a lot of the phone-level stuff requires tweaking to match the hardware. Generic PC stuff doesn't work that well for those use-cases.

    @lufthans that, but it is also a mentality. For instance, when starting the phone they could have chosen KDE Plasma or Ubports, and instead they decided to build their own. (and support those on the side? what does that even mean?)

    I hope that Purism is successful, but right now I'm worried they have a fatal case of NIH.

    @lufthans as far as I know. Which means they should really fix the security of Debian and ship that. They've got some good fixes that could help everyone.

    @lufthans ha, not willing to wait THAT long!

    Also, it bugs me the Purism laptops ship with their own custom OS. Feels a lot like Android to me.

    @lufthans yeah, it was a couple years old and at a work event, so they're getting me a new machine. Besides the waiting for it to come in and a general hate wasting good hardware, it could be a lot worse.

    My tablet fell and cracked its screen. Usable with an external monitor and keyboard, but it kept getting ghost touches. Learned how to disable the touchscreen:

    $ xinput

    Lists all of your devices. Find the device ID if your touch screen (mine is 15).

    $ xinput disable 15

    Or use the number of your device. Hope that helps someone in a similar situation.
