Perhaps we can get more people to support Open Source software if this comic goes viral. โ€” https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/kindness

    @WelshPixie that's cool.

Just to be curious, did you purposely post the link instead of following your account there and boosting the upload? If so, why?

I'm curious how people are using multiple accounts on the Fediverse.

Collection of articles about gun violence in America. I find especially interesting the idea that gun rights effectively lower the value of freedom of speech. โ€” https://kottke.org/18/05/the-united-states-of-guns-4

Like many of you, I read the news of a single person killing at least 10 people in Santa Fe, Texas today. While this is an outrage

@HerraBRE best Aikido move I've ever done is manipulating a toddler onto a toilet while he was refusing. Got him there before he realized what was happening.

@squeakypancakes @HerraBRE I don't know stats, but I imagine the number of people that have the flatpak handles for websites to be really small.

For instance, that wouldn't work on my machines because I use the upstream Firefox snap and it can't install stuff in my machine (a good thing).

@HerraBRE it sounds like you're thinking about them as packaging formats, which they are, but that's not the most interesting part. The biggest change is converting to a confinement model for your application. It puts a lot of pressure on developers for a huge user win, though developers get wins too in a more direct access to their users.

For instance, you can make a snap from a deb really easily. But it may not work.

Also, I don't expect my next Ubuntu desktop to be able to install debs.

@HerraBRE I would say snaps, but I'm an Ubuntu member. And I worked on Snapcraft for a while.

The big reason is that even though Flatpak exists in my distros it's not setup with repos by default. So users still can't find your stuff.

@gingerrroot that's a good point. It's easy to write off jerks as nonredeemable, but usually there are underlying issues.

@gingerrroot I see what you're saying from the mental health perspective, but I think that the phrase is also used to describe people doing it for political or marketing reasons.

They clearly need to be separated as one is a cause for concern and the other is just trying to become famous for the wrong reasons.

@ksteimel I'm interested in the idea of providing childcare at Texas Linux Fest, but one concern I have is finding a vendor that could do it.

Does anyone know a vendor that could provide conference childcare in the DFW area?

I just learned that the #Debian #Gitlab instance is not limited to the Debian project but open for any Free Software project. In case you are looking for a (new) home, I think Debian is a great place to be. https://salsa.debian.org

@freakazoid @cwebber in Texas it is going toward maintenance. A state that cares more about road maintenance than its citizenry.

@freakazoid @cwebber I think two tiers is a definite risk.

The other way to look at it though is an additional tax on the rich to fund roads. Which works along as they are all maintained to the same level.

@freakazoid @cwebber I'm interested, and curious how a highway project in DFW is going to go with regards to that.

Basically they like a company to make the big upfront investment, and get money for tolls for 30 years, but then they have to give the highway back to the state. The contract also has requirements on the maintenance and quality over that time.

It makes me nervous, but it seems like the gov't did all the right stuff.

@freakazoid @cwebber no, I mean "managed like" it is a department of the local city like Parks & Rec or the Fire department. Sure, they could hire private contractors to do work as needed but the leadership would be city employees.
