@ajroach42 Yessss, somehow that's exactly what I imagined! I can't speak for anyone else, but I would love any candidate that sent a résumé styled like that.
My company also recently got a job application and the entire cover letter was just the words "David Tennant is the best Doctor Who!" I said we should hire that applicant on the spot :P But then you probably don't want to be that ballsy if it's important that you actually get hired somewhere.
@ajroach42 My advice is to get it down to one page, if you can. You just need enough to show you're experienced and competent, and you can fit a summary of about ten years into one page. Don't include a headshot, and definitely no hobbies unless they're relevant (e.g. running your own Mastodon instance might be relevant, but playing in a band wouldn't be).
I wouldn't worry about it being boring or generic. The résumé is just to make you look competent enough to be worth interviewing. The interview is where they test you for personality and culture fit, so that's the time to bust out your best jokes and compare notes on the latest "Game of Thrones". When the hiring manager sifts through applicants' résumés, they'll discard anyone too inexperienced or with terrible cover letters, and they'll do a phone interview with the rest.
If you want to tart up the résumé without making it longer, giving it an interesting style might help, but there's nothing wrong with clean and straightforward. Maybe make it look a bit like an old terminal or a BBS? But you don't want it to be too gimmicky. I just use a Caslon font because it's always elegant, and I put a monogram of my initials next to my name because it doesn't take up extra vertical space and gives it a little style.
I remember seeing the name when I passed it, but didn't remember who it was. I just think it's a ghastly statue. He looks so smug. But it's a fun statue to photograph, and I liked the light in this shot.
@nev I was heartbroken when laptops went widescreen. It makes sense for watching movies, but I'm a writer — all that horizontal space is just wasted. Does anyone still make square laptops?
Seriously, though, keep an eye out for my mate Parker's short film "Below the Trees https://www.parkerbrennon.com/belowthetrees". I can't wait to see the finished movie. Word has it that it's "spodookulous", "happerblappy", and "a thing".
