I'm trying to make a DeviantArt for my photos, so I'm revisiting a few favorites. It's been about 15 months since I started getting into film photography. I have taken (and take) a looooot of shite photos, but every now and then something surprises me. I miss the simple joys of shooting on my Holga.

@bouncinglime I sure as hell do! Radium ALL THE THINGS.

@ajroach42 Half an hour. They're probably running late because how are they supposed to get there, they don't even have a bike.
-
@interfly Thank you! I know how I'll be wasting my evening now π
-
@ajroach42 You're right, false cognates are word that look like they share a root but don't. There's a lot of angst in ancient linguistics trying to puzzle out the relationships between obscure languages, and alas a lot of wishful thinking when scholars take two words and try to prove they're related.
False friends look like they'd have a similar meaning but don't (whether they're real cognates or not). "Sinister" in Latin means "left", but in English it means "creepy". They're cognates, but you can't rely on that when you've neglected to memorize your Latin vocab.

@interfly Hah, and there was me flushed with popularity! Thanks, I'm looking forward to chatting with more linguists in the fediverse. Seems like German would be handy to have on these sites, though outside of conlangs my motto is usually "lingua mortua sola lingua bona est." I'm trying to dust off my Middle Egyptian.
-
@interfly What ho! I don't think I know you from anywhere, but I like to connect with other Esperantists and conlangers. And you know that anyone who has Blissymbolics on the first page of their timeline is clearly an individual of impeccable nostril, tasteful kidney, and even spleen.
-
@bouncinglime Hah, oh *that* Doctor :P I think we can expect episodes like "Doctor Who Stands Around Awkwardly at Parties", "Doctor Who and the Faux Pas of Death", and "Doctor Who Spends Hours Riffling Through the Second-Hand Book & Record Shop."
As for Peter Capaldi, the man himself is wonderful but he's suffering with those Moffat scripts. The most recent season was much better β we got a lesbian companion *and* a female Master which was a nice combo. And "Twice Upon a Time" brings back the First Doctor! Rubbish story, but so much squee value:

Here's the other example of the genre, "Man of the Century". I did love "Future '38", but I think "Man of the Century" works better as a concept and the dialogue clicks a bit better for me. It's just a pure, silly, unrestrained joy.

I just found this by accident, so I gotta do my bit to plug "Future '38". It's no "Man of the Century", but goddamn this was a complete delight. And seriously? Neil deGrasse Tyson? Classy move, people, classy move.

@bouncinglime Me too! I'm hoping they'll go for a male companion to keep the gender balance. But maybe a woman? Do you reckon they could pull off an all-lady TARDIS?
-
@archillect Oh hello. He looks familiar.

Just found a publicity photo of the new Doctor. Also managed to pick up a snappy patchwork leather jacket at a flea market. These two events are entirely unrelated.

Emperor Norton and his beautiful consort the Countess Lola Montez protest the Ghirardelli restaurant on Market for taking the Emperor Norton Sundae off the menu.
Bring back the sundae! Bring back the sundae!

@tom Absolutely hideous. Just get an analogue one, then at least you can cash in on some old school cool.
-
@bouncinglime Weird β it looks all right on the web to me, but then it's up to individual clients how they want to render it. In any case, you can jump straight to the original link if that helps :P

@stealthmunchkin Already bought a copy! I really need to be better connected.
-
@stealthmunchkin Oh my god yes. I had no idea there was another Adams novelization coming. Thanks for the heads-up!

Can we talk about how incredibly cool this is? https://petapixel.com/2018/01/11/built-first-natural-light-wet-plate-studio-us-century/ #photography #GiveMeAnalogueOrGiveMeDeath
