It is! There's been a surprising revival in the last few years as a counter-reaction to how slow, overloaded, unsecure, and ad-ridden the Web has become. A lot of Gopher-philes seem to be at home here in the fediverse too — @ajroach42 is a font of knowledge about this (and other things).
-
Welp! I did it, I went and registered a .gopher address with https://www.opennic.org/. My Gopher phlog is now also accessible at gopher://stjohn.gopher (if you're using OpenNIC's DNS servers).
I love the idea of an alternative DNS infrastructure with new domains. My blog has already been available at stjohn.bit for ages, which uses a related alternate TLD run on blockchain technology. Will any of these alternate systems amount to much? Probably not. But you'll have to drag me away kicking and screaming to stop me taking part :P

There's some brilliant surrealism in this movie. I love the march of the playing cards. I just wish all this creative brilliance were employed in making something worthwhile instead of a twee distraction.
-
I think I've seen clips from it! But again, isn't the bad guy the one who everyone remembers? It's like Batman. No-one cares about Batman, it's all about the villains — Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Danny DeVito as Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Heath Ledger as the Joker…
Disney do have a couple of genuinely dark movies under their belt, but they seem more like accidents compared to their normal work. "The Brave Little Toaster" is a great movie. And if I'm any judge. the lamp and the clock radio are totally gay for each other :P

This Cheshire cat is high af. He's just tripping balls the whole movie.

Here I am wishing they'd made the movie Mary Blair designed — check out her edgy, creative concept art https://ohmy.disney.com/insider/2014/08/20/mary-blair-the-movies-the-concept-art-of-alice-in-wonderland/ for the film.
-
Oh man, the order of this movie is a hot mess. It's all over the place. It makes you wonder why they bothered adapting this if they didn't even like the book. Was it really just a cash-grab? And who was their target audience — people who hated the book?
-
Oh good, the Dodo's actually smoking a pipe. I was worried they might have ret-conned it into a lipstick or a lollipop.

Tonight I'm watching the Disney movie of "Alice in Wonderland". The insane popularity of Disney is still inexplicable to me. I appreciate they had some extraordinary technical achievements (the multiplane camera) and artistic achievements ("Fantasia"). But on the whole Disney's saccharine, neutered world has no appeal to me.
When people talk about their favorite Disney bits these days it's always the dark bits — the drunk scene from "Dumbo", Ursula from "The Little Mermaid", Scar from "The Lion King". But they seem so far from the sexless, fangless, lily-white mediocrity that characterizes the bulk of Disney's screen time. And that's what made Disney famous — the likes of Mickey Mouse and totally bland musical numbers.

Maris won't be joining us this evening. She's wrestling an octopus for the last eight seats at a "Willie Nelson sings the best of Aqua" concert.

I just received my antique Hungarian dingleberry holster from my personal shopper in Hergenbergergeborgen.

Yessss, post all the video! This guy's a legend.

There's this busker in #SanFrancisco who does a crazy good #MichaelJackson impression:

I mean he's got make-up and costume and dance moves and everything. It's quite the spectacle.

Anyone out there in the fediverse have any experience with this alternative DNS network called https://www.opennic.org/? It seems like a great idea — I'm just curious how many people actually use it. I registered some domains on Namecoin's blockchain DNS a while ago, but I doubt it was ever worth the money I paid.
Even so, I'm highly tempted to nab myself a .gopher domain :P

Looking for a chill movie for tonight. I made the mistake last week of popping on "Carrie" after a long day, and by the end of it I was clenching my teeth and spitting, "Burn them. Burn them all."

Film is a drug!
-
That could contribute to it, but I do the same scanning on film I get professionally developed at a lab so that wouldn't account for the difference. I gather if you agitate the development process too vigorously it can make the film more grainy, so that's probably it.
Then of course you can develop film with wine and coffee, so you can expect *that* to look like it's been through the wars.
-
Absolutely! This roll was mostly for practice, but I got some nice shots. Here's the first one on the roll, and you can see I scratched the buggery out of it trying to load it into the developing tank:

Shots later in the roll look all right, though:

These were shot on Kodak Tri-X, which I think normally has a much less pronounced grain. I suspect I need to be a bit more accurate with some steps in the development process, but it's all practice, and until then a bit of grain never hurt anyone.

I've been shooting film for a while now, but I've always had it processed at a film lab. Tonight I developed my own black and white film for the first time! I scratched the shit out of it trying to get it into the developing spool, but in my defense the ball bearings were jammed to hell. I'll know a bit better next time.
Outside of the scratches, though, it's amazing — you pop some chemicals in the tank and before you know it you're unrolling all your pictures. That's some crazy voodoo.
