To all the GnuPG donors: We already made it from 41€ to 206€ within just 36 hours. This is pretty insane, and most of the donors were inspired by this Mastodon campaign.

Please contribute if you can, and let's at least try to surpass the April amount of 342€ πŸ€— We can do better than that!

If you can't contribute directly, please boost this as much as you can 🎈

Medium cancels membership programs of remaining subscription publisher partners. β€œCould we have a better metaphor for the way Silicon Valley considers local journalism?” (Cf. PatreonΒ  - how publishers view their content providers - with contempt.) https://shitposter.club/url/1858610

Lovely view of Jupiter - always amazing to see the bandy stripes and moons even through a lowly 3" refractor. (And you can see the moons with good enough binoculars.)

One thing I've learned as a Filipina American in corporate life is to speak in my soft voice and frame my solutions as questions. If I start strong with a solution to deaf ears, any point after that is seen as defensive. This isn't true in all cases, but it makes every day fucking exhausting.

Eben, I don't want some government bureaucrat explaining to me how they can make my life better using my own data which they've purloined somehow.

Well worth reading on the role played by liberalism in the rise of the hard right. Always thought it odd and sad that some people simply dismiss Trump voters or Brexiters out of hand without trying to understand or engage their legitimate grievances.Β  - https://www.opendemocracy.net/michael-j-sandel/populism-trump-and-future-of-democracy

@h @kdsch Unfortunately a lot of work on knowledge representation and knowledge-based systems seems to have fallen by the wayside - the A.I. "scruffies" are in ascendance - even though a lot of it is just "pattern matching" and they don't really know how their systems "work" half the time. </rant>

@h @kdsch Okay, I see where you're coming from now. My own work can involve a lot of gathering, collating and summarizing knowledge - but there are no really suitable systems for easily storing free-format data (arbitrary documents, images, video clips etc.), archive and search.

@h @kdsch Human eyes, hands and fingers haven't improved much in even longer, so not really surprising if an input method well suited to normal hand/eye/finger coordination isn't going to change much. However, _accessibility_ needs to be addressed urgently, and with ageing populations, chances are a significant proportion of us are going to need accessibility technologies at some point in time.

Noticing some people trying to use Stallman's old jokes as a reason to dismiss Free Software or claim that only sexists support it. They do something similar occasionally with Torvalds. Neither of these personalities are beyond criticism, so it's an easy lever to yank on. They seem to overlook that proprietary software discriminates against people in very arbitrary ways and is exclusionary by nature.
