(it is rare that researchers actually describe how they are defining "male" and "female". less of a big deal with spiders but one of my pet peeves when it comes to humans. often, i think, the researchers themselves don't even know. so this displays remarkable self-awareness)
#Arachtober day 24: this is from about a month ago, at the height of Zygiella mating season. Males hang at the periphery of females' webs, patiently plucking out courtship songs. Returning home one night, I saw one single-minded suitor had fallen prey to a young male yellow sac spider! Look at his face in the last pic, like, "...What??"
Handed in my library card, told them why, lots of "sorry"s all round. I know well the TERF Chief Librarian doesn't speak for many library staff but it's - it just gives me a sick feeling even to see the logo, you know?
Looks like they're finally sunsetting gender! They just posted the date, and good news folks: we've got most of a year to find other identity frameworks to migrate to! :blobuwu:
Matt Galloway, longtime host of Toronto morning show Metro Morning, will be leaving to host The Current.
> "I've been getting out of bed at 3:00 in the morning to hop on my bike and greet Toronto listeners on the airwaves for the last decade…I'm looking forward to being part of the big stories in Canada today, and diving into the international topics that I'm always curious about."
@wohali from what I understand, the decision was not about rights or even legal cases but on who was more likely to sue.
it would also set a precedent that could easily be turned against marginalized communities - e.g. see the current use of hate laws weaponized against Palestinians. Like, not "this could backfire at some unspecified point in the future" but "this *will* backfire in the next year".
Arguably that doesn't matter as such people will disregard the rules when they like.
