So I spend the past hour with writing a XSS protection function[1] for my Mastodon feed on my blog.[2]
I'm happy with it and it works well, but now I want to put a link to the microblog page[3] on the navigation and wherever I put it, it turns out to looks misplaced. *grml*

If you ever wondered why some people like this "unbelievable complicated" editor vim on their systems, or you started to use vim because everyone said it's cool but your currently breaking your fingers and can't wrap your head around it, this is an awesome answer on StackOverflow helping you:
"Your problem with Vim is that you don't grok vi."

wow… ~¼ million new people in one day :D
Why do people put so many emotions into postings. We are on the Internet. Whenever you write a swear word, just don't press the send button. Re-read your statement and rephrase the section.
If you are annoyed/sad/angry/… Keep calm. Breath. Think about how it could be explained that things are, like they are right now. If you know the answer, write a blog post with sources. If you don't know the answer, write non-suggestive questions.
I hope the internet becomes a calm place again 🤞 🤞 🤞
I currently consider to make a Podcast about security related topics and some projects. But right now I'm not sure who I should do it with.
Someone bored/crazy enough to start such a project?
Using Ubuntu?
The British National Cyber Security Centre has published its guide on how to secure Ubuntu 18.04 systems.

Definitely worth reading even for non-Ubuntu users ^^

Npm put the concept of component based development at its core.
This is a valid thing but people don't consider the implications. In Component-driven development you have to trust your component vendors. I know this is something some people hate, but welcome to how the world works.
The problem in the node ecosystem is that trust is cheap to get and there are often no big vendors for tons of components
When you are a youtuber and want to help #peertube to success, help it by making your peertube content more exclusive than your Youtube content.
How to do?
Post your videos 2 days earlier on Peertube before you publish them on YouTube.
This doesn't hurt you or your followers while giving them a good reason to switch and make YouTube less central :)
Want to keep your web traffic isolated?
#Firefox provided a while ago an addon for multi-user-containers that allows you to isolate various pages from each other:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/
Now you can just create masses of these containers with a short life-time:

All #signal desktop users should update as soon as possible.
Your systems are at risk:
https://thehackernews.com/2018/05/signal-messenger-vulnerability.html
Why are these good news? Well, a known vulnerability is a good vulnerability as soon as it's fixed :) And they are fixed.
PS: Flatpak fix is already landed and will be build and distributed soon.
You're working on something important and need to focus? Use the fullscreen-mode of your programs (usually by pressing F11).
Now #Gnome hides usual notifications, while ones that are flagged as "critical", like a battery warning, still show up.
This helps you to focus on your work. After finishing your work you can leave the full screen mode and see all the notifications in the message tray.
Hint: You can switch between multiple windows in fullscreen-mode.
Well, the alternatives where already mentioned. (and didn't got any comment). #Mattermost, #rocketchat, #matrix, #IRC, …
If you want to get as close as possible to slack but without vendor lock, Mattermost is the way to go.
But to me it seems like the decision is already made, it just wants a justification in this issue.
Deleting social media accounts isn't always straight forward. Getting away from attention stealing apps is the first step.
This and some more details one of the #Fedora community leaders, Justin, wrote up in his recent blog post about leaving Facebook and Instagram:

Decentralize your world.
There is of course #mastodon as federated social media.
There is good old #email as federated postbox (as long as not everyone uses GMail).
There is #peertube as a federated video platform.
There is #Riot / Matrix.org as federated group messaging.
There is #XMPP for federated 1on1 messaging.
And there is #nextcloud as federated cloud storage.
In theory most services are already federated. We only miss more users :)
I'm currently switching away from #telegram. Other than most people I don't simply delete my account.
First step was: Evaluating alternatives for my contacts. So I went for Riot and Signal as platforms I recommend for further communication.
Next step was making Telegram low priority. Disabling notifications on my phone, remove the desktop app.
Now I make it less accessible. Removing it from my home screen.
As soon as I make it to backup my messages I'm going to delete it.
