    @bootjack @djsundog
    Even with my TI-99/4A or C64, though, I had to peek and poke my way around. The thing I miss about those days, and I don't miss much, is that EVERYONE I knew with a computer had some kind of BASIC at home so there was a lingua franca for us to talk about computers in general. Swapping info and magazines and programs was de rigueur then. Exactly why M$ called us thieves.

    @bootjack @djsundog I learned assembly from hacking the Defender game at the local laundromat. It was a game changer.

    @djsundog Even more, they were designed so that you and your friends felt responsible. Virtually everything on those computers was something that you yourself put there. And if you didn't like it, you picked up a copy of Byte magazine or Puget Sound Computer User and figured out how to change it.

    And you were actively encouraged to do so.

    After becoming disillusioned as an analytic chemist, I put my chemistry knowledge to use in two distinctly different fields.

    On one track I became a professional baker.
    .
    On the other I became a professional photographer.

    In Europe where I studied, both fields are deeply respected, even Romantic. Back home in the US of A, both skills became trivial, reduced to Instagram antics.

    Chemistry is about fundamental changes. And no one here fundamentally wants change.

    @djsundog There are far worse things from the 80s than Howard Jones, bad hair notwithstanding.

    Working on two "Orphan Works" pieces. A game wherein ten poets give each other an unfinished piece from their files to be finished by Monday and then read aloud at the Seattle Star's first Creative Commons literary event.

    Extremely challenging, yet somehow enjoyable. Almost like art is supposed to be, or something.

    @djsundog When I moved from Aurora to Greenwood -- not a big move, obvs -- I kept my photography books and my poetry, and drove everything else around the city to fill up different Little Free Libraries in town. Which took a few days, since I'd amassed about 3,000 books.

    Libraries allow humanity to exist in a state of grace.
