@rysiek @pettter @HerraBRE @bjoern
There's an example of a peer-to-peer world where you trust nobody: Ethereum.
And as we've seen, people are not well suited to live in such a world, because they:
- make mistakes
- get scammed
- are generally bad at expressing laws with code, let alone expressing social norms with code -

@NETIZEN IMO another important step is disrupting the oligopoly with some privacy-respecting alternatives, preferably FLOSS, decentralized and non-profit.

@lhark @taiz running code clientside was a mistake.
Letting frontend devs write code was a mistake. -

@clacke @satchmoz I don't think we've killed e-mail.
IMO it's not dead yet.
And it's not us killing it, it's the normies. -

@satchmoz @clacke the idea was for the e-mail provider to do the heavy lifting, but for the meantinme, Mozilla ran a fallback identity provider that had password login and would do the usual e-mail verification.
They had it running for a few years, and if e-mail providers didn't give a fuck, I'm not surprised Mozilla called it a failure. -

So Im making a twitter account for a hopeful fledgling collective, and mid tweet the page redirects to "Your account is locked, you must enter your phone number to unlock it"
Excuse me fuck no. But then, I can't delete the account without giving my phone number. Fuck this shit man. This is one of many reasons why I literally never use twitter and evidence that I am not willing to try to approprite their shitty tools for my activist goals. If I have to persuade people to use mastodon in order for them to follow the initiative on social media, then by golly i'll do it

@hax do you want to find a motherboard with the same CPU socket and keep the rest of the parts, or are you gonna upgrade everything at once?

@clacke @satchmoz right now I'm looking forward to UAF. Which will hopefully be like ssh-copy-id but for the web.

@hardbass2k8 @sim no need if the instance is based in such a country. But still helpful, because some users may be from abroad, and unaware of such law in non-their country.

@sim but there are things, eg. whether all Jews should be killed or not, for which the society tested both options, and one of them turned out to be terrible. And we don't need to debate this again. And people decided that "kill the jews" is too dangerous of a meme, that virally infects people's minds and then causes a tragedy. So we must prevent such a meme from spreading.

@sim well there's also middle ground - you can insult people and whatnot, but you're not allowed to advocate racism or nazizm. Many instances have such rules. And I know of at least two countries which have this as law.

@sim the thing is, on some instances, the terms of use say that you're not allowed to be a jerk. So if a mastodon instance was a city-state (cc: @Mr_Lee ) then in some of them being a jerk would be illegal.

@sim yes, but this still means your instance isn't a coherent community with common values and whatnot. Which is not what people expect and assume. And they act on their assumption. And they block your instance. And you can't be surprised by this.
