even the relationship between jake and his dad seemed to be kinda tense? like, ben would often be pretty dismissive of what jake wanted and even sometimes quite controlling and mean, and expected jake to always be "strong" just like him.

it took half the show until we finally got episodes where jake started to be allowed to soften up and be more openly human

that could be a purposeful character flaw in ben sisko but...if it was, it never felt properly addressed

literally everyone in ds9 was trying to be some sort of gritty hardass while their personalities oozed with vulnerabilities and quirks that would've been so fun to explore. but we rarely saw them properly explore any of it beyond fleeting moments of tenderness that didn't seem to change much

except somehow worf manages to be more alive and 3-dimensional than in tng

to some extent we get this in ds9. but what we don't really see is characters opening up about themselves until it's far too late, and they never really seem to learn from it either way until the very end.

characters will hide things from each other, go off on their own missions/do whatever they feel like without talking to anyone first, just blatantly disregard each other's deepest needs while keeping some sort of friendly yet thick skin overtop

voyager got the closest to being soft and friendly by having the crew be more open and vulnerable and digging deep into the idea of what it is to be flawed, to be human, the addition of a borg main character and a serial killer and all that other weird stuff just really posed some interesting and intimate questions

we get to know the crew more personally, beyond just their stiff appearance as starfleet officers performing for everyone else

also the other star treks have a lot to complain about but i always seem to hear people picking on voyager, what gives? it was the second best star trek right behind ds9 and you can't tell me otherwise

i have a feeling it has a lot to do with the whole atmosphere being way softer and friendlier and almost family-like whereas the atmosphere in other star treks is largely tense and stiff? ds9 had a very good familial vibe but it was overshadowed by everyone having "thick skin"

now if you want to talk about the borg baby mysteriously disappearing then that's another story, but not even i care about that plothole other than a few seconds of "oh shit they just completely forgot about it didn't they" because it probably wouldn't have been a super interesting addition to the show anyway

the problem is that at the beginning of the show, they mentioned they had a limited supply because they didn't know if there were any non-hostile races with which they could trade, or planets to get resources from to refuel and fix their ship

eventually they discovered that they could refule and such, and off camera decided there wasn't really any reason to hold back on the photon torpedoes

reading any star trek theories from trekkies is always a treat because they have no idea about the obvious canonical solutions/explanations they're missing while citing the most obscure references possible to back up their own far-fetched claims

like how people talk about voyager letting loose way more photon torpedoes than they actually had, not realising that a ship with replicators could easily make more photon torpedoes if it ever stopped for supplies (they did. a lot.)

@BearishMushroom not sure if you're joking or not but do be careful as the warm air in your apartment could warm up the fridge and make things go bad more quickly

idk there's something fun about seeing a bunch of self-important assholes all get in a pissing match and throw punches at each other over nothing and feeling good about myself because i know better than they do

and then you get to see them own up to their shit and actually grow and learn from those experiences in ways you don't expect and it's just...surprisingly good

confession: i really dig cop shows but generally just the ones that have a lot of good well explained detective work and decent takes on sociology/psychology (as well as punching up a bunch)

suits deals a lot with relationships of all kinds and it's actually pretty decent with it despite a lot of the heteronormativity, on top of a lot of law talk that may or may not be realistic, and also they shit on CEOs a lot and paint them as bratty children that need to be coerced into not being shady

actually you probably would know that i'd be into something like this if you knew me well enough considering i watch a lot of similar stuff but this is like...the least "me" show that i watch this religiously

you wouldn't think i'd be into a show like suits but here i am, still watching at season 8

why am i so into mainstream lawyer drama
