    • TQ, activist aspect

@TQ There is no way of knowing (with certainly) that an instance no longer exists. It may be temporarily offline, in which case federation will resume when it becomes online again.

Might be useful to show when the user's instance was last online though.

I really like Vivaldi's feature of coloring the browser UI based on the main color of the website.

Luckily, there is a Firefox extension that does just that. Still has some bugs, but works nice overall (especially if you use it in combination with the dark theme).

Woman (around 35 years) scrolls through her Facebook feed, stopping over a friend's baby photo - reactions (likes and loves) are pouring in.

She sighs, as she is having problems getting pregnant. In the next frame she takes a pill and boom, she has a kid - proceeding to posting a photo of the child on Facebook and watching the likes counter go up.

What a crass way to advertise a drug for infertility.

"Maintaining An Independent Browser Is Incredibly Expensive" by Robert O'Callahan: http://robert.ocallahan.org/2017/12/maintaining-independent-browser-is.html

Mozilla is the last organization building their own browser engine who isn't also a big tech company (Google, Microsoft, Apple). The work they're doing is incredibly important for maintaining a diverse and vendor-agnostic web.

@Technowix Out of browser can be achieve by adding it to the home screen (screenshot).

On the lightness and speed side I agree there are still plenty of things we can improve 👍 https://toot.cafe/media/OHSAmGVpIzurAEHS-gg

@Technowix Ah, I meant what improvements do you think a native version could bring on top of the website? Trying to figure out what is missing for you to bridge the gap between web and native.

@nolan Interesting to see where this will lead, though I worry that integrating PWAs with the stores will unfairly increase the market share of the browsers that are native on that platform (going on the assumption that PWAs installed from the store will use EdgeHTML, or WebKit if Apple follows the same approach).

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding Progressive Web Apps for regular users. Some people think the install prompt installs them from the Play Store, others assume they are Instant Apps (since a full application can't possibly be installed so quickly).

And of course some are disappointed when they find out they are actually build using web technologies (a.k.a. are not real apps).

@torgo I've seen quite a few people reporting high CPU usage on macOS with v57. Seems to be caused by the multi-process architecture (https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/7g6k9n/firefox_quantum_is_eating_your_cpu_help_us_debug/).

@baldur I'm guessing that a (small) part of why the stats may be skewed it that Firefox users tend to be more privacy conscious, thus more likely to use uBlock Origin and other similar solutions that block trackers.
