(I think I know what I'm getting for Christmas. The lady just told me where she was going to shop, and I know that there is a thing there that I want but wouldn't ever buy myself, or at leas there used to be, and now I'm trying to figure out in my mind where I would put it and I'm a little excited but also trying not to set my expectations because I could be wrong or it might be unavailable.)

Everything here is just so expensive and it's really a commuter town. Folks live here because they work nearby. No one grew up here.
I mean, I guess some people grew up here. I should ask those people where the local punks disappear to (but the answer to that is almost certainly [Expensive place in DC] or [Cheap place in Baltimore that has no external sings and is only open 4 hours a month] or [2 hours away in north MD/south VA.]

I wonder if older tech in some form will be one of few functioning remnants decades or a century from now
There’s a project called Collapse OS to “Bootstrap post-collapse technology” https://collapseos.org
Basically tools and programs for the Z80, a proven workhorse for decades available as scavenged parts by the millions
Very #Cyberpunk
BTW this is a paraphrase of a quote by Shodan from System Shock 2

These days, though, I'm in a much bigger, much less cool city. I don't know of any event spaces that actually do ... Anything fun ever.
I'll reach out to some local artists when the time comes and see where they do stuff locally, but I'm expecting to have to go far away.

Andrew (R.S Admin) (ajroach42@retro.social)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Dec-2019 11:04:46 EST Andrew (R.S Admin) @qcat Thanks!
I have plans to do transfers of ... Many things at the moment. All of them will be shared as widely as I'm legally able. (see http://ajroach42.com/preserving-old-film/ )
I might do some watch-together parties online and/or in person.
As for an actual screening, in a real theater, Maybe? I'm doing SD transfers right now, so that would need to wait until after I have my 4k rig ready, which will be sometime next year (screening an SD file on a 50 foot screen looks Very Bad™)

Andrew (R.S Admin) (ajroach42@retro.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Dec-2019 21:50:24 EST Andrew (R.S Admin) In the case of The Dick Tracy Show, there are better transfers out there than the one I've done here (but that's not true for most of the other films in my collection!)
This was just a quick way to test settings, etc.
I'm putting together a blog post on the process. I probably won't actually get to doing The Big Fix until tomorrow or this weekend, but ... I can actually Do It whenever I sit down to do it.

Andrew (R.S Admin) (ajroach42@retro.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Dec-2019 21:48:58 EST Andrew (R.S Admin) The episode is presented in black and white (because my film is black and white, even though there were versions of this episode released on film in color.)
This is true for a lot of stuff that I own. The version I have is rarely the best version that was ever released. That's okay! A good transfer of an okay version of the film is better than a BAD transfer of a good version of the film, IMO.

Andrew (R.S Admin) (ajroach42@retro.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Dec-2019 21:45:28 EST Andrew (R.S Admin) The audio on this video is a little quiet because I didn't do anything about that before I uploaded it.
It's cropped a little too tightly (because there was a lot of damage at the edges of the film).
The film grain has been compressed a little more aggressively than I would have otherwise preferred for upload, but it's watchable.
It doesn't look

Be gentle with the server, it's just a Raspberry Pi 3.
But, uhh, here's the Dick Tracy cartoon I captured, so you can get an idea of what this process delivers. The film is about a 3/5 on condition.
I haven't looked in to the copyright on this film so I don't know how widely I can share it. It was just the shortest, cheapest, most common film I had handy, so it's the one I chose for my test transfer.
