> tell me, applicant, what do you think about... government? < nothing. i think nothing at all about it. > good, good. so you won't impede our efforts to supply concentration camps? < i would think nothing about it. < nothing at all. > very good. when can you start?
it's weird to think about internet hate machines as a consequence of how we have structured social interactions on the web, linking them closely with manipulative metrics and dopamine-trickling mechanisms...
it especially fucks me up how these hate machines swallow kids into their ranks.
but also how intensifying geopolitical conflicts have rewarded state actors for goading and abetting these hate machines, heightening their impact and especially their harm.
youtube recently changed their anti-adblocking kit such that i have to disable my adblocker to use it, so uh thanks google for that big SHOULD WE DEPORT ILLEGALS? PAID FOR BY 🍊4PREZ ad over an anti-capitalist anthem 🤦♀️
2010 diana: wow software is so amazing! everything is possible! we can innovate good things 😎 2019: i will never know how many people my software has killed but for what i thought was a foursquare clone, it is a lot
software needs foundations and unions to shut out the profiteers that pervert our hard work. foundations like the ASF and PSF have a long history of stewarding software properties specifically so they don’t become financial instruments, but labor has no steward. these foundations struggle to so much as discuss compensating labor beyond the profiteer’s purview. for that we need unions. not just company unions either, but nonexclusive trade unions to gather and protect the innumerable disciplines of the craft, to leverage collective bargaining both for labor standards and practical standards alike. until we organize, profiteers and propertarians will continue to monetize and exploit the ecosystem that volunteers built.
> It is time to stop looking at America in a childish way. You cannot appeal to these people. You cannot simply replace these people. You have to break the system that they serve. That is the obstacle in our path. You can bang your head on the wall all you want. The wall will never feel sorry for you. You have to tear it down.
ethical consumption feels weirdly like a hostage situation.
“fork it over!” the profiteer demands, “or the planet gets it!” hoo boy 😰
like we could just end hunger but instead companies jack prices to protect profits even as climate change diminishes crop yields and further exacerbates hunger. then they have the nerve to say, well, if people really wanted ethical food, why do they buy unethical food? argh 🤦♀️
