The reaction we should be having to watching Will Wheaton get bullied and harassed out of the fediverse is not "I thought you people would be better!" It's "I thought Mastodon was designed to protect people from exactly this."
Peoples is peoples, and we're going to find ways to be mean to each other no matter how we organize ourselves. Technology can constrain that meanness, or amplify it. Twitter's a megaphone. Can we build Mastodon into a nice set of noise-cancelling headphones?

On the last days of my tour, I'm seeing a lot of places I remember from my childhood.
But the Danube has changed a lot, for the better. The river which had been forced into a straight bed is now flowing freely again, meandering, and making a diverse and wonderful landscape.
Also lots of animals have returned, that had been close to extinction when I was a child.
It's good to see!

do we notice if some ISP association pays a social media company to create a bunch of mastodon accounts, populate them with human-like posts, but intersperse posts against net neutrality and in favor of zero rating?

@ted yeah, the EU would claim the GDPR pertains, but would it really have an impact?
Centralized services can attempt to keep EU data in the EU
If a federated instance is running in Wakanda, does it need to prohibit interaction with EU citizens or be subject to the obligations of GDPR? Same for any nation that claims jurisdiction ( including censorship ) of its citizens
I want federated to work, we have to meet non-technical requirements as well
