I hear you, but this is a false dichotomy. I believe that without capitalism you could have both the activity and the lifestyle without needing to care about the income. -

American Express keeps asking me to "update [my] income and financial asset information so that [they] may service [me] better."
However my income hasn't increased since the last time I updated these and they don't consider confirming existing values as a valid update. 🤷♂️ -

Thinking about what would happen if everybody got the same superpower instead of a chosen few. Flight would be fun, laser eyes chaotic, invisibility really interesting with regard to public space privacy. We’d need phase changing to avoid bumping into each other all the time. -

Thank you for the recommendation, I've seen it being played on Twitch but it seemed a little too fast-paced for me, and I fondly remember the narrator from Bastion so I'll probably miss him. -

This conversation reminded me that I barely have any favorite creators. I have favorite creations, but most of my attempts at following the work of several musicians, artists and video game designers and studios have failed. Either subsequent works didn't catch my attention or they outright weren't my thing.
The last painful example for me was with Supergiant Games. I loved Bastion (2011) to pieces, but I couldn't get in their following title, Transistor (2014). I'm not saying it is a bad game, it just didn't resonate with me the same way Bastion did, and so it was yet another reminder that I'm not personally attuned to specific creators, just to specific creations.
I do envy this kind of familiarity that @Erik Moeller mentions, though, and I wish I could name people I'm diligently following their work, but it simply doesn't seem in the cards for me.♲ @eloquence@social.coop: Just starting to get into "Dicey Dungeons" by Terry Cavanagh (which is great!) and it reminds me why I love indie games so much.
Like a favorite author, you develop a trust that certain developers are going to keep making great stuff.
Besides Terry Cavanagh, for me that's folks like Daniel Mullins (Pony Island), Lucas Pope (Papers Please), Christine Love (Analogue: A Hate Story), Justin Ma/Matthew Davis (FTL, Into the Breach), ConcernedApe (Stardew Valley).
Who are your favorite indie devs? -

This is true in this context, but I feel like it circles back to my point, every single person believes they'll make it if only they reach the exit fast enough, but of course not everybody can do that at the same time. So it isn't specifically about over or under reaction, but about the wrong reaction given the situation, be it meeting people during a pandemic, speeding on public roads, or rush to the exits in case of an evacuation.
And this all stems from a failure to assess personal risks which has dire consequences for the group. -

How can over-reacting to a risk be more dangerous than under-reacting? Take driving skills, for example, how would over-caution be more dangerous for yourself and other drivers than over-confidence? -

Trusting personal responsibility in public safety issues is dangerous because most people believe they're above the statistical median for any given risk. This is likely to be wrong more often than not and the consequences of this overconfidence affects us but also people around. -

Beyond the obvious pyramid schemes and the Bored Apes Yacht Club Nazi symbols, there is evidence crypto-currencies are the new vehicle for a certain breed of eugenics and limited government with historical precedents. ♲ @davetroy@twitter.com: 1/There are people who are genuinely trying to talk intelligently about cryptocurrencies, but can’t because they don’t have historical background. This thread tries to correct that by suggesting required reading. First, it’s necessary to know what problem it attempts to solve.

Maybe it's a specific service I don't use, maybe there's an internal review system, everything still sucks about this: the private cameras, the social media stunts, the coercion through filming, and of course the precarity of Amazon employment.
