@callahad depends on what you mean by different. What difference do you want? Automation, then probably #NixOS, all Containers, then probably Fedora #Silverblue or others; Security? Then probably #QubesOS…
@Naughtylus And this is something that people work on with #WebAuthn. #WebAUthn can be used as 2FA as explained before (u2f), but also standalone, if implemented and you have a device with fingerprint scanner or password input or so…
@Naughtylus …"something you remember" (this is what 2FA is about) to login.
Now, this could also be replaced if that #2FA method does also do this "user authentication" on the device itself. And note that it should be a separate device, so if it is hacked, this authentication cannot be circumvented.
@Naughtylus we use usernames/passwords, because they are still the most secure method. Looking at the app description of SQRL there, it seems it is also nothing more than "authenticate with this app/device" (a PGP key pair would be the same).
I.e. that again is basically just FIDO #U2F, which is used as #2A. I.e. "additional to password authenticate with some crypto, which proves a device belongs to you".
The thing passwords provide is that if your device is stolen or hacked, you still need…
