@bgcarlisle I think I heard ten years ago that there are more PhDs granted each year than there are stable academic jobs opening up. Don`t graduate students begin their studies knowing that it's quite likely they'll never become professors?

I feel sorry for someone who works hard but doesn't achieve her dream job; but on the other hand these are very smart people who should have realistic ambitions, and who are capable of working at non-academic careers.

@Laurelai Does anyone really hate the poor or the disabled? In general, leftists believe wealth is the cause of poverty and the right believes wealth is the cure for poverty.

How much people really care about the poor and disabled, and how much it's just a figleaf for the policies they'd want to pursue anyway is of course open to debate. Presumably the percentage of personal income people give to charity says where their hearts are more than their politics does.

@Canageek @ink_slinger I listen to "In Our Time" from the BBC, and to a few CBC ones. But largely my list has US podcasts; it would be healthy to have some other sources.
