@loppear @mattcropp this is it exactly. At the time that I looked at scholar.social it was setting itself up to offer more of that, and my own experience of higher education is that promoting our research is not the most progressive thing we could do.

But when I’m among educators I feel a kind of kinship on questions of practice that seem more critical of higher education as it is.

Social networking is ripe for exploitation in a reputational economy.

@lobisomem @mattcropp I’m a university academic but scholar.social didn’t quite work for me. I realise I was looking for an educator community, not necessarily a scholar community. Somehow the big dance hall of mastodon.social has been where I’ve stayed.

Something I’d forgotten in my brief wandering away from here is how much this brings me stuff I do not see anywhere else.

I don’t draw. I don’t fantasy. I don’t tech. I scarcely queer. In fact I barely understand what’s going on around me here most days.

But I experience no boredom with it at all. I feel like I get to listen in on new things all the time.

Something about community makes us hear from one another better.

I sat at my desk all day, and nothing I did made any difference to the things to be done.

But then I came home and walked on the beach with my daughter, who stood for four hours at her checkout without a break, and every step felt like we were rejoining our selves.

It’s still late summer in the ocean. We watched a man teaching a kid to surf, holding him up and throwing him into the wave like a javelin.

Truly I can’t recall “I spent the better part of the afternoon reading” any time recently so now I’m thinking about how time, space and capacity could converge to let this happen.

Capacity might be the weak point. I have trained myself to browse, not read.

Guessing: this is a complex time for your research?

@paralithode it’s quietly very good to accompany your invocation outside of the walled garden.

Road paving is always a negotiation in tension. There’s a road corner near here that turns out a deep pothole whenever it rains. The tarmac just collapses, and I always think: uh oh, sinkhole.

@mrgah Yes, it’s like a big slow dance with people taking turns to sit out. It’s ok to need to step back.

I think something about this has reached sustainability.

I was that person until just now: briefly away being busy with work and caring for others. In that time away Twitter snared me in exhausted moments. But I never stopped missing this space where actual humans are.

It felt like I’d left home without putting a note on the fridge: a good sense of commitment to being part of a thing, not just a bystander.

So nice to walk back in.
