There’s a family at the Little Library box across the street, perusing books. A little girl is standing on tiptoes, peeking in to see what’s good to read today. The dad is pointing to a book. I hope she finds something left by a neighbor. I put some children’s graphic novels in there the other day but they are long gone.
I tried to reflect and to write about this concept some time back (during a period of digital auditing myself), about how Mastodon is where I find myself as a "writer" as opposed to Twitter, where I find myself as a "teacher." Of course, neither of those identity demarcations is completely true. I am always spilling over and into myself.
“Research is a formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose. It is a seeking that he who wishes to know the cosmic secrets of the world and they that dwell therein.”
-- from Modern American Memoirs (edited by Annie Dillard and Cort Conley), excerpt by Zora Neale Hurston, page 390
#smallquotes (with more than a hint here of #smallstories ... being curious and 'research' being observations of the world)
My 13 year old discovered my four-track recorder in the basement, dragged it upstairs to ask if he could use it. Of course. His fingers turned knobs. Slid faders. We'll need cassette tapes, I said, and then I was struck by memories of hours/days I spent with four-track recorders so many years ago (the original Tascam was my companion - this one came later). Writing songs. Recording them. Boxes of master tapes exist. Years before this life, that was my life. I felt them merge. #smallstories
The other day, I weighed bringing home two books about music from the library. I took the wrong one. I took the wrong darned one. But I went back today and got the other book, the one I should have gotten. Now I #amreading Meet Me in the Bathroom about the NYC music scene. (And I don't know why I didn't just get both books at the time ... ) Happy, now.
Special thanks for this round of the #MusicCollab goes to @sixohsix , who mastered the album, @safertohatethem , who came up with the playlist order, and @dogtrax , who keeps writing wonderful blog articles about our little project. But everyone who participated is awesome and should be applauded! 💙 🎼 :music_collab:
“Although bound by a physical backbone most of us hardly ever consider, the Internet seems to float, boundless, from device to device. The sum of its experiences can’t be revealed by any consideration of its infrastructure, and a cable tells us nothing about the conversations coursing through it.”
-- from Broad Band (The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet) by Claire Evans, page 145
I don't begrudge folks who are trying to make a living and finding ways to get work. But the group known as "college painters" has me annoyed to the point of frustration. They put paper fliers on the flags of mailboxes this weekend, promoting their home painting service. Fine. But nearly every flier flew off the flags in the breeze, leaving he streets of our neighborhood littered with the group's advertisements. The only reason I might call the number now is to complain. #smallstories
