We began the first days of our school year with Houston's flooding on our minds. My young students quickly decided to do something, hosting a school event in Week One to raise money for supplies for a Houston school in desperate need. As a teacher, this altruistic attitude is exactly the tone I hope to nurture all year, so seeing it blossom so early is warmth to the heart. They raised $900 and will help choose supplies. Yesterday, they were already worrying about Florida. So am I. #smallstories

The chaotic call
of coyotes
reaches into
dreams,
shattering the lull
of sleep
with the sounds
of a faraway hunt.

It is true that the seasons here in New England can change in an instant. I came into the house after teaching all day, and the air outside was warm and heavy. A look out the window a few minutes later: rain showers. Then, after rain, taking the dog out for the walk, I was hit by a blast of cold, Autumn air at the doorway. It was as if in that short bit of time the seasons had suddenly changed on me. I went back in for a jacket. #smallstories

@scottnesbitt Thx. Appreciate the sharing. Now my own personal wondering is: do I really want another social media app on my phone? Even for this space, which I am coming to appreciate. I feel as if I am needing to move more in the opposite -- narrowing the field of notifications and connections and resisting the pull of apps. That's my own grappling point these days ...

I'm already noticing the daydreamers in my classes (or maybe they are bored? already?). The window scene (just the front driveway .. nothing dramatic out there) becomes irresistible to them, and it is often only my gentle hand on desk that seems to bring them back to the present. I get like that, too, when I write or make music. Lost in thought. Still. There's a lot of learning ahead of us (this is day six) and I worry I am already losing some of them to their own inner landscapes. #smallstories
