@cypnk you just reminded me of the Buddhist meditation on 'bag of bones.' Disgusting bodies, these. There are 13 vile substances of the 31/32 body part-objects of meditation.

@cypnk i sometimes think of it as a big sentient blob machine made out of little tiny blob machines working together

It’s strange to think we’re all sentient chemical reactions held together by stretchy bags of tissue

hi i'm a software engineer and i worked in the web for a good 8 years before i ever realized what the abbreviations i18n and l10n (internationalization and localization) stood for
literally i knew what they were *about*, but thought the numbers had something to do with some funky standards body or some shit
numeronyms of this form are bad so so so so bad don't

How each person uses their internet connection is different, but the shared feature is text
It shouldn’t be hard to mass produce tiny wireless mesh boxes which allow anyone to transmit and receive text messages with very little power
If there’s a node in every home, conceivably, someone could send a message cross-country (albeit slowly). If anything, during a natural disaster or any emergency, they could ask for help or let loved ones know they’re alive when all other infrastructure is down

There’s no way for me to express the joy in seeing people mending their belongings in lieu of buying more things
I wish this is more of the holiday spirit. Not a large, bearded, weirdo who sneaks in through the chimney. But families full of makers and kid DIYers, building things, fixing things, enjoying their own creativity

Link rot is a problem for most websites, but it's especially hard on news orgs. How are we expected to take the arbiters of information seriously in their duty to inform the public when they can't even maintain access to their archives for a few years?
More importantly, the Web Archive can't capture every news source and it's an increasingly vital role too. We're losing access to vast swaths of public knowledge almost as soon its generated

Idea I've been playing with this week:
"Minimum Viable, Programmable Computer"Something roughly the size of an iPhone 5/SE that you can directly program in rudimentary assembly with built in keys for opcodes and data
Maybe it can have a display and a few pins to connect to hardware (acting as Yet Another Register you can write to). As a fun exercise, you can maybe set pause the program and increment each "step" in the program counter
I think it would also be a nice learning tool
