It looks like the #HN position on Mastodon has moved on from "Mastodon can never work because (no one uses it || it doesn't make money for its investors)" to "Mastodon is full of yucky SJWs". I expect in a few weeks it will be "Mastodon can never work because it's not build on blockchain".

If you keep a paper journal or diary, how do you keep it casually private (ie, safe from roommates, loved ones, and guests, not from the NSA)?

* tiny lock on the book itself?
* a hiding place you return it to?
* a document safe or gun safe, or locking desk drawer?
* writing it in Tengwar or Theban script?
* writing it in Vigenère cipher?

I've said this before, but the state of Bluetooth support on GNU/Linux is terrible. And other than lack of people willing and able to work on it, there's no reason it should be, because in Android/Linux, including AOSP, it works fine.

(I'm not able to work on it, and I can't single-handedly fund someone to work on it, but I'd happily buy coffee once a week for someone who could.)

Been listening to people on here talking about #rural #cybrepunk aesthetics. Today, drove past a bar in rural east Tennessee called the "Dead Zone Saloon" (and indeed, had no cell service in that area). I think it counts.

Also got a strong feeling of the pre-Jackpot setting of *The Peripheral* from some of those unincorporated towns.

Of course, other than email, they are for user-hostile websites. But at least you can use them to let people who *do* use those sites to share your material.

And if you still use those sites, putting these buttons on your site may make it easier to #POSSE (publish on own site, syndicate elsewhere).

What I really wish is that every single email provider would also provide XMPP, so your JID is the same as your email address, with the same password. So none of this "I can't sign up for another account" excuse. And you have one address book, without it being tied to the legacy phone system.

And we almost had something close to this, but Google decided to close up their chat system, and everyone followed suit, and it didn't even benefit Google. Does anyone actually use Allo?
