   I am increasingly displeased with my new MSI laptop's power management and I'm not sure if it's a Windows or MSI problem:
   - When I enable automatic sleep while plugged in, it will occasionally stay stuck sleeping while the fans are screeching. Only a force shutdown will let me use the computer again.
   - When I disable automatic sleep while plugged, the screen will never shut down, even after I manually lock the screen.
   - Since neither the keyboard nor the associated SteelSeries software account for it, I had to create a macro to navigate the Windows menu to the Sleep function. When used, the Windows menu is still open when awakened.
   - When manually put to sleep this way, the laptop will eventually hibernate by itself, slowing down the awakening cycle.

   My previous Asus laptop running Windows 10 didn't have any of these shortcomings which makes me wonder whether it's another Windows 11 gripe or poor compared engineering at MSI or both.

     New woes since I wrote this:
     - Dota 2 randomly crashes back to desktop, sometimes several times in the same evening. At other times it works flawlessly.
     - The "FN" key used to illuminate the keys that can be used with it. Now it happens when I press the letter "T"??? Pretty distracting to have the keyboard quickly switch colors whenever I'm typing some text.
     - It automatically restarted twice in a couple days, which made me lose work in a software I left open. Interestingly, on the first restart, it was able to rescue the file I was working on. Not on the second time. 😞

     I've contacted the seller, I'm not hoping for much but it's the worst computer I've ever own, surely there's a way not to flush $2,500 down the drain?

   I was recommended by YouTube a video about an “incredible” industrial process to turn discarded plastic bags into lawn chairs.

   The video depicted people in sandals operating heavy machinery in a dusty garage probably located in India or Southeast Asia, including handling molten plastic blobs made from heating bunches of plastic bags shoved into a hot grinder and placed into a hydraulic press.

   I left the video nauseated, less by the clearly unsafe work conditions and the obvious worker exploitation than by the video title that was only focusing on the “incredible” process of turning plastic junk into more plastic junk. 🤢

   Ein Heckmotor sitzt direkt auf der Achse. Ein Mittelmotor wiederum zieht an der Kette. Und wenn man - wie ich - gerne schnell beschleunigt, d.h. Motor und Körperkraft kombiniert, erhöht das merklich den Verschleiß.

   Ich habe zu Ostern mit meiner Mutter Radtouren gemacht. Da wir da eher gemütlich unterwegs waren, bin ich auf einem Viertel der Strecke nur mit Körperkraft unterwegs gewesen, was auch sehr gut klappte.

     Jepp. Ich habe das Kàro. Bevor ich das Gravel hatte, habe ich es für praktisch jede Situation eingesetzt, d.h. zum Pendeln, zum Einkaufen, zum Besuchen von Freunden, zum Sport (schauen), auf Radtouren (gerade an heißen Sommertagen ist es sehr angenehm, wenn man keinen Rucksack auf dem Rücken hat, sondern Getränke, Verpflegung und Co. vorne in der Tasche) ... Ich fahre das Teil auch immer wieder mit zwei vollen Getränkekisten. Auch das geht. Natürlich sollte man dann nicht ganz so sportlich fahren, aber der Motor packt das locker und es fühlt sich auch gut an.

     Das Kàro hat sowieso den Vorteil, dass es sich sehr sportlich fährt. Man sitzt dort auch in einer sehr sportlichen Position und passenderweise ist auch ein Rennsattel verbaut. Ich fahre mit dem Teil locker über 30km/h und habe schon so manchen Rennradler damit überrascht, dass ich (zumindest für ein paar Minuten) Fühlung halten konnte.

     Ich habe eine ältere Variante des Neodrives-Motor, der manchmal etwas zickt. So muss ich zum Hochfahren nach einigen Stunden Standzeit immer zweimal den Stecker ziehen und dann den Knopf am Akku drücken, dann erst fährt das System hoch. Aber mittlerweile gibt es neuere Varianten (wo auch der Akku besser verbaut ist), bei denen dann hoffentlich solche Fehler nicht mehr auftreten. Sollte mal irgendwas mit dem Rad sein, würde ich es auf alle Fälle wieder kaufen.

     Ich habe mir mein erstes Pedelec gekauft, nachdem ich mit einem Kunden eine Radtour gemacht hatte. Er hatte ein Pedelec, ich ein "Bio-Bike". Wir sind da in Südniedersachsen gefahren, wo es bergig ist. Es war schon fast gemein, wie wenig er sich anstrengen musste. Und da ich sowieso meine Knieprobleme hatte und ich ungeplant Geld zur Verfügung hatte, habe ich das dann für das erste Pedelec ausgegeben.

     Here, some government agencies still require documents to be sent by fax, so we visit Kinko's (now Fedex Office) or the UPS Store and pay them to send.
     
     Back when the house had a landline, there was a fax machine, but there was so much spam that we disconnected it. Yes, there are (or were) companies that would randomly dial numbers and try to fax pages of advertising.

   Still aiming to come to Vancouver and to Portland OR around 2024-07-24–08-07 ish for Fossy and to meet up with Fedi friends, but I need to sort out the timing of my HK visa renewal and my trip before I can fully confirm.

   I have a new passport. My current valid visa is in my expired passport and the visa expires in late September. I cannot renew now, or I would have done that, I have to wait until earliest X days before expiry to renew.

      @clacke The instance closes 2024-04-16. Primary reason is that the annual #VPS hosting payment is due and I cannot pay it. But upgrade and disk space are secondary but still important reasons.
      
      This is going to be the first time in many years that I'm not hosting anything.

    Never knew "That's the Way" (I Like It) was by Dead or Alive. Actually I think I've never heard the song itself before, only ever inserted as a jingle or background to other media.

When I saw the video I was thinking wow, this sound is so unmistakeably Dead or Alive, who could I have never noticed, but clearly what I've heard is the original K C & the Sunshine Band original, and the 80s cover is new to me.

    I got a survey from #OPM asking me as a supervisor about my experience with #HR in the hiring process, as if field supervisors have anything to do with hiring. It was a complete waste, because exactly zero questions were relevant to my job.

      I talked to both Kenny and S today. They both got the same survey. Where I was careful to emphasize how much was non-applicable to field supervisors, S emphasized how poorly the candidates sent by HR matched actual job requirements. Kenny emphasized how much $EMPLOYER emphasizes formal, official internal training programs rather than putting new employees with someone who can teach them to do the job, even if they can't sign it off in the person's training book.

      Overall, the message was that HR isn’t really helpful in getting qualified & quality employees into the positions where they should be.
      
      But of course, this survey was sent to thousands of people, including those “incompetent headquarters employees” that I occasionally mention. This means that they are likely going to get a pat on the back and “good job” ratings from most of them.

    Currently, Tuesday 2024-04-16 is my intended quitting day. It is my expectation that my accounts will be turned off within an hour after I send in my resignation e-mail, and every day before then is already expected to be busy.
    
    I'll have to ensure that "personal" documents (such as tax forms and people's non-agency contact info) are copied off of the agency's equipment before I send in the resignation. That way, all I need is for them to send a shipping label (even better if Fedex will pick it up, because I don't know where their nearest storefront is).
    
    Since the agency's cellphone is still en route from #SoCal to #SWMO, I would wait up to a week longer. Except there are several deadlines coming up very soon, including one that would require them to spend hundreds of dollars (that they don't need to spend if I'm leaving) and one which involves some anticipated policy changes that I don't agree with.
