@dragnucs What I mean is they use the same APIs and AP protocol, and attract pretty much the same people (those who will even consider using the #Fediverse instead of [or in addition to] #Corpocentric #Lockiverse platforms like #Facebook, #Instagram, #Twitter).
#sigrok has joined the #fediverse! We'll be posting announces and random other stuff over at @sigrok, with additional stuff from individual developer accounts.
Quick #introduction: sigrok is a FOSS project for all kinds of test&measurement gear, including logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, programmable power supplies, and lots more.
Portable libs, protocol decoders written in #python, various CLI and GUI frontends.
Good morning all #tzag#fediverse As the working week closes and, for many of us, the holiday season begins let us show love to one another. There is enough hatred in this world, we don't need more bitterness, anger, jealousy or rivalry (we have that in abundance). Show people that you care, show them that they are important and loved. Especially look out for those who lost somebody near to them, especially if this is their first Christmas alone. Don't forget to #BeExcellentToEachOther Merry Christmas folks and happy holidays.
Make 2019 the year you contribute back - make plans to volunteer or donate monthly to the fediverse projects you use.
The more resources we have, the more fighting we can do for you, for our future, and the more progress we can make taking back the social web from harmful proprietary options like facebook and twitter.
@ente me too! I think it's because so many of us now work from home, or #hotdesk, and the #fediverse provides a sense of pseudo-community that makes up for not having a consistent group of colleagues to geek out with. Back in #Aotearoa they have lots of 'geek drinks' events, which scratch a similar itch in an arguably healthier way (if you put aside the alcohol consumption involved ;) @snowdrift@clacke@enkiv2
With all the awesome #selfhosting going on in the #Fediverse, and with all the NAT deployed in the world, I kind of feel it would make a lot of sense for Fediverse software to support Tor natively.
That way doesn't matter where you connect your instance to the Internet.
@jcbrand > Social media is in many ways toxic because of inconsiderate responses.
Yes, which is why I often link to Drew's blog pieces, and seldom to his #fediverse posts (unless I'm looking for examples of 'arrogant, self-important attitudes among software engineers' ;-) @z428
@aral sure does, and I notice that broken threading puts a real limiter on the quality of discussions on the #fediverse. I'd really like to see all the #ActivityPub apps really focus in on getting threading working smoothly across the whole fediverse, and maybe write up implementation guidelines to be put up on places like activitypub.rocks, so new implementers can get it right too. I'm on a Mastodon server, and I use #Pinafore.social as my client. They mostly reconstruct threads pretty well.
@lj_writes I agree with Mike here, AP provides for many functions that aren't yet implemented across all the #fediverse apps, because they couldn't be federated under #OStatus (the older standard #Mastodon adopted from #StatusNet / #GNUsocial) or choices were made not to use them (eg groups in Mastodon). @mike can you recommend the DW crew a more general resource on implementing AP than the Mastodon one they are looking at?
@LWFlouisa in fact, that's a really useful analogy for explaining the #fediverse to newbies. It's like a busy city centre, and each instance is a cafe where people can gather to talk. Anyone can set up their own cafe, and everyone can decide which cafes to frequent (by deciding which users to follow).
@CharredStencil on the #fediverse, the only rules are that anybody can publish, and each user chooses who to follow, and what they look at and reply to. FB and the birdsite started out that way, but now, via algorithms, they act as a gatekeeper, just as older media like network TV do.
