    I've been using Pinafore.social as my main fediverse app since I switched to a Mastodon account (after the death of most of the Quitter family of GNU social instances). It's easy to look at, easy to use, has some offline support (with more planned), and new features appear regularly enough to keep me excited without overwhelming me.

    #HatTip to @nolan for all your great work on this.

    Seems that both Lowes and Home Depot are hiring right now.

    The jobs are part-time, but there are several young folks in the #Fediverse who could really use some work experience. (For one thing, once you’re paying your own way and a contributing member of our society, a lot of the political opinions you once held become invalidated.)

    I’d consider it myself, but unless I’m completely replacing my current $EMPLOYER, I have to seek their permission before I accept any other job. (They call that an “ethics” rule, but it serves to make people more dependent on the agency and less able to make moral / ethical choices.)

    Huzzah! This will be my GNU Social account, which I will use to follow @lnxw48a1 and explore this side of the #Fediverse (since #Pleroma and #Mastodon are weirdly disconnected from #GNUSocial). I've been at @bthall@bikeshed.party (#Pleroma) for a while, but I look forward to using this account, too.

    @saintfury That's a sad statement. I see lots of people pursuing their own "protect our community" strategies, and so far, I've never seen a one that will work in the current, heterogeneous Fediverse or any other existing network.

    For example, Mastodon restricts its searches to a user's own posts. So people build their own search engines to make it possible to find people and topics.

    Some software has broken posting scopes: pretending scope-limited posts are "direct messages" is probably the most dangerous decision made, and "followers only" is only slightly less dangerous. People exchange contact and financial information in posts with the equivalent of a "no trespassing" sign, but there's no fence of any kind.

    Finally, the worst "community safety" feature is the propaganda that tells people the #Fediverse is a safe, non-public space without [undesired group]. It isn't and it never has been. Sure, one can set conventions of behavior within their particular subset of instances, but those conventions do not apply to those outside that subset. Frankly, we'd be safer if we assume that everything we post is public, and that features meant to create non-public subsets may not work as expected.

    User Moderation:
    * hide boosts
    * unfollow
    * mute notifications
    * block from following

    Instance Moderation:
    * Hide instance
    * Block instance from following (not in the existing menu)

    Thread on #Twitter about the quarantine’s impact on !smallbiz (and therefore, on their owners, managers, employees, suppliers, customers). A lot of people in the #Fediverse don’t seem to understand that when the restaurants close, those employees, who already struggle to stay afloat, are left with nothing.

      No small business has a fortress balance sheet. In practice most business owners don't live month-to-month, but they do live quarter-to-quarter. And, most are low-margin businesses with customer concentration. Most small businesses, and especially hospitality-based, are toast.

    So instead of #Klout deciding who is popular, as on #Twitter, #Fediverse people decided that blocklist maintainers would decide? I'd rather let Klout do it. At least everyone knew they were a joke.

    ♲ @320x200@post.lurk.org: New essay: Seven theses on the Fediverse and the becoming of FLOSS

    Recently, @rra and I have been working on an essay highlighting questions about the #Fediverse and how these are getting entangled with #FLOSS practices. From software production to structure and governance within alternative social media, online communities and politics.

    The text follows a multi theses model, to map the different things we've been looking at and publish the current state of our research.

    It is the closing chapter of a new publication from INC/Transmediale (networkcultures.org/blog/publi…)

    PDF of the text: monoskop.org/images/c/cc/Manso…
