@nipos While I have no direct problem with #Mastodon, I see it problematic how the platform or better software is evolving in general. And especially the FSFE could manage to build up an own instance instead moving to others, building more centralized nodes.
@succfemboi @toromino From what I know #Pleroma is complete new designed from the ground up. But being compatible with OStatus, more than #Mastodon. ;-)
And what about #Pleroma for example? But yeah, instead moving on to #Diaspora and #Mastodon. So projects could be forgotten or even better: The technical side is moving and therefore projects remain left behind. As I've said: Fascinating to read about that. #Sigh #Thoughts
Worried about the dominance of big instances? No, really, this is quite natural.
As an emergent and self-governing system, it could be expected that the size distribution of #Mastodon instances roughly follows Zipf's law.
Does it?
At first you see the top 6 instances, and then the rest. But on a log-log scale the size distribution is close to a straight line, which would be expected from an emergent system.
The clou of a project is "girls writing about technology" (but not only that).
Besides the fact, that it's now more lifestyle bullshit, I'm really tired of all that shit and I want to quit my OWN project.
What about something like that in English? I know that all the girls* (cis-, trans-, I don't care) here are geeks and nerds and knows a lot about tech, so, maybe? We could write about security, the AI, Internet of shit and everything else.
One misconception of #mastodon is that when you arrive here you expect to see all your #twitter friends or at least someone to follow. It's like walking into a library and expecting your favorite book to be lying on the table in the lobby waiting for you. The community you seek is here, you just have to do a bit more work to find them.
Great to see so many new people trying #Mastodon :blobcheer:
Most common barrier for them seems to be the interface, but this could perhaps be made much easer with a single tweak of the Mastodon UI: allow a double-width home column, either optionally or as default.
Twitter has several columns like Mastodon, but the main feed is wider so it's always clear which column is which. There's a sense of focus that Masto lacks.
Has this been proposed? If not, can someone propose it?
Things I *don't* like about #Mastodon so far: - it feels very, very white dominated, with little visible #POC presence (at least compared to the bird site). - I actually really miss the preview cards for links on the bird site. They worked really well for visual people like me. - it's almost impossible to preview another instance without signing up first.
After sleeping on it, I think #Mastodon should rename ‘instances’ to ‘Communities.’
Instances feels too technical and I see even savvy people struggling to understand it.
I argue communities would make much more sense. It denotes much of the purpose behind _why_ this service has different instances, and many people will already be familiar with the concept from Reddit (the, what, sixth most popular site on the net?).
We've had quite the influx of new users on Mastodon recently. Welcome to you all! Here are some links that you might like to explore if you're new here, or if just want to know more about how Mastodon works.
And despite talking about new user experience a lot, the feedback from new users (which are pain points for existing users) is ignored. The main UI is complex, columns should flex, why can't I interact with public pages, etc.
