#OpenSource dot com asks: What was the most important moment in the history of #Linux? - Many people probably no longer know that early versions of Linux where proprietary because the license prohibited commercial redistribution. Therefore, for me it was the most important moment when Linus Thorvalds released Linux as #FreeSoftware under the #GNU #GPL. Otherwise Linux wouldn't have had this enormous success. https://opensource.com/article/18/8/linux-history

@Shamar
You seem to be confused about what your position is.
> "I do NOT think that #FreeSoftware is good and #OpenSource is evil."
> And I think that OSS projects become VERY EVIL whenever they try to marginalize FS or mute #hackers.
If it's not a hero/ villain story (#BlackWhiteFallacy), when does "free software" become "VERY EVIL"? Allowing the villain to not be a villain if and when they help the hero does not change the basic shape of the story.
I love #tmap (R package for maps) so much! I just wanted to reverse the order of my color palette "viridis", so I set a "-" before that palette's name and it just worked. #R #RStudio #maps #opensource

> The true problem is #Capitalism.
Basically.
> The fact is that as #EvgenyMorozov pointed out, #OpenSource is a byproduct of Corporations and Venture Capitalism.
That's not a fact, it's the story he tells. The other story, the one that Christine Peterson tells, is that "open source" was a hack to get corporations to support and fund the free code software, instead of fighting it.

So there's what happened, and there's the story we tell ourselves about it.
Fun fact: We took inspiration for Tutanota's new, Google-free push notification when @Gargron 's @Mastodon used SSE for push (they now use another push system). 👍 👏 It's exciting to build open source alternatives to liberate people from using data mining services. #foss #opensource Head over to @fdroidorg to read details on our new push implementation 👉 https://f-droid.org/en/2018/09/03/replacing-gcm-in-tutanota.html
Just supported the Krita bug-fixing campaign and so should you!

Christine Peterson tells her version of the story behind how the term #OpenSource was coined:

Still waiting for #GNOME 3.30 on #ArchLinux. But now it's in Testing and will arrive when 3.30.1 is out. #opensource #floss
Installing the #questionaire auto-scan software #sdaps gets easier. We now have a better "Getting Started" page: https://sdaps.org/getting-started/ and we're currently trying to get it working on a #hackintosh #kvm, so #macos users can get it working (but honestly it's a mess right now...) #floss #foss #opensource
You need to #translate #opensource software? Maybe #Gtranslator is something for you and it might get updated soon (new commits coming in) https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtranslator/ #translation #freesoftware #floss #gnome

Dough is a WIP #opensource #DoH (#DNS Queries over HTTPS) server built to the IETF spec written in #Elixir. I have Firefox #TRR configured to use it instead of Cloudflare.
Still have some QoL changes to make before I suggest everyone uses it; configuration options, bin releases, etc.
I'd love to get folks to try it and ensure it works beyond the Arch machines I have it on.

I am really excited. #opensource #floss
#ZeroPhone, an #opensource #Linux powered $50 #smartphone, is being launched on Crowd Supply. It's described as having, "no carrier locks, bloated apps, or data mining, and it doesn't depend on big companies." It's based on #RaspberryPi Zero and #Arduino.
Is there any good #modular, #sustainable, #opensource, #repairable, or otherwise just good #smartphone - kind of like #fairphone - that I can get in so-called America? I'm really struggling to find anything. Just a rec for a good alternative to Samsung and Apple would be a start!
RIP Swift Hummingbird
We should all be very hesitant to back "#opensource" projects primarily developed + funded by a single for-profit organization.
Not enough interest & profits for the company? project canned.
I'm sure the actual devs had the best intentions, and loved the project. Unfortunately, their brains are being directed to more profitable solutions, time and again.
What's going to happen when it's a project you've adopted?
Yesterday at #OSSummit I realized I'm still struggling with this question:
What is a clear "organizational contribution" to #OpenSource?
Cash or in-kind gifts are easy to understand. Things that people do, much murkier.
An organization is an attribute of a contributor, who may have affiliations with multiple orgs.
How can a #FreeSoftware project clearly understand "from which org" any given code (or non-code) contribution is really coming from?
Human brains are not that compartmentalized.
