Somsants went live early 2012, we hoped other nodes would appear in other barrios de Barcelona and a new sovereign network would be born. But it never happened (yet, anyway). Back then we all ran statusnet software. I don't know the details on exactly how the transition to gnusocial happened. @mattl @mmn I think the !fediverse really took hold after the identica incident. It was as if the sun had been removed from the solar system. Just a few disorientated planets left behind. It was only then, once the overwhelmingly big central node had gone, that other nodes grew in equal conditions.
I also remember Erkan finding us and getting in touch personally by email. Pulling us together, letting us know we were not alone and creating a sense of sysadmin community. I found this old email.

@kat I can recall only one epic fail, but it was epic: Apparently, there's some grim legal logic in the #US which means that, after a certain amount of success, unless you're a 501c you can't afford not to have an IPO. And from that point on, you are a slave to shareholders. So #StatusNet 1.0 became "Enterprise Social Software". I posted something to the effect of "Oh, goody. Lotus Notes." which Evan took exception to. Part of why Evan P was funding #Identi.ca & #StatusNet mostly out of his own pocket was that he formerly had a VC-funded enterprise behind it, but advertising revenues were weak and users demanded its removal. There were some commercial customers and some individuals that paid, but probably not nearly enough.
He had looked at some #OStatus protocol enhancements that could have improved federation and reduced cost, but many of the component protocols were sponsored by companies like #Google, which was no longer interested in them. -

To be fair, the !StatusNet network that Evan was running became unmanageable -- it cost too much to run, and I think Evan was funding most of it himself (although there were/are a number of paying #StatusNet customers). Evan developed #PumpIO to reduce the number of servers needed to run a federated network, and purposely kept the UI to a minimum to encourage federation. Sadly, that didn't work. Porting identi.ca from StatusNet to PumpIO was intended to introduce people to PumpIO as well as reduce Evan's costs. That partly worked; identi.ca is alive and well as a community, although much reduced from its glory days around 2013. But the #bifurcation did spawn a large number of new StatusNet / !GNUsocial instances, so that was a good thing too. But you're right in that PumpIO never gained widespread traction, the proof of which is in its lack of continued development. In that respect #GNUsocial and !OStatus are more successful than PumpIO -

I'm running a personal instance of !GNUsocial for myself (https://gs.jonkman.ca), an old instance of #StatusNet (http://sn.jonkman.ca) that I'm maintaining because it has groups that I want to preserve, a StatusNet instance for @LaurelRusswurm@s.russwurm.com that also has a bunch of groups I want to preserve, and, online #AnyDayNow, a public instance at @KWLUG, my local Linux Users Group (configuration stymied by security settings at a level that prevent webapps from running). Don't join that yet; I may have to nuke it to fix its problems. -
