@mmin the other major downside of Riot, vs. Signal or Wire, is that the #UX degrades a lot once you turn encryption on in a chat, because you have to constantly faff around with verifying devices and backing up keys. They devs are aware of the problem and promise they are working on a more elegant, automated solution, but for now it's an issue. Much less of a concern if you run your own homeserver for your friends+family chats, but good to be aware of.
@Naughtylus none of them have achieved mainstream usage and I think what's mainly missing from all of them is a #UX accessible to the average user. This includes not just the UI but the whole onboarding process (from explanation to installation), ie what #Netscape did for the web, what webmail did for email, and what early IM clients like #ICQ did for chat. Preceding tools were not only awkward to use, for those not used to bash terminals, and therefore hard to understand at all.
We nonprofit and movement techies are influenced by (and even take inspiration from) corporate technology.
Especially in #design and #ux circles. After reading No Shortcuts: Organizing in the New Guilded Age I've been thinking about how we should be drawing lessons from organizers more than marketers when it comes to design goals, principles, patterns, etc.
Speaking of #design and #ux. Some say the new #Facebook redesign quite reminds current #Vkontakte. VK was born by copying Facebook idea and refining it: simple interface, easy to find settings, non-algorithmic feed, payments (as of lately). Now, perhaps, Facebook people copy certain solutions they liked in VK.
@kfwyre good question :) I'm still experimenting myself. Let me know what your experience is. FWIW A better #UX might be something like; you login on a new device and provide a label only you can see. Then you'd go back to the first device you used, and approve the new device with the correct label.
@kfwyre Wire chat history doesn't automatically sync across devices though. So if you've been using Wire on a mobile, then log into the web app on a laptop, it won't be there right away. I was able to sync my history across two user profiles on my laptop, by using the exporting a backup and importing it, using options in the 'settings'. That may also be possible between mobile and laptop but I agree the #UX could be improved there.
@wire what about Wire? It's annoying that their desktop clients are just the web client in an #Electron wrapper, but the #UX is excellent. Any idea how robust their crypto is? @alexl
@aral also I totally agree that #UX matters a lot, but this ...
> We do not arrogantly expect people to put in undue effort to learn our tools. We invest undue effort ourselves in making them intuitive and easy to use.
Hello all! I'm looking for some #UX warriors to test my little desktop app @sengi_app in order to get some early feedback. All you need is a browser and tolerance to broken early alphas. 😶 You can find more info about Sengi here: https://medium.com/sengi-app If you're interested, just @ me, i'll give you access to "the thing". 🙂
I can tell you a bit about the Minneapolis positions and the Sydney position. Otherwise, I’ll have to point you to our recruiter. Job descriptions at https://www.perforce.com/careers (or I can fetch them for you as you are interested)
