      Mastodon Meetup at London Hackspace
      from Eventbrite
A chance for mastodon users to meetup in the flesh. the inspiration from the event came from this video of a twitter event in its early growth days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gb2lfY8-iRY Social networking, back in your hands The world’s largest free, open-source, decentralized microblogging network Mastodon isn’t one place and one set of rules: it’s thousands of unique, interconnected communities to choose from, filled with different people, interests, languages, and needs. Don’t like the rules? You’re free to join any community you like, or better yet: you can host your own, on your own terms! Putting the user first. You’re a person, not a product. Mastodon is a free, open-source development that has been crowdfunded, not financed. All instances are independently owned, operated, and moderated. There is no monopoly by a single commercial company, no ads, and no tracking. Mastodon works for you, and not the other way around. The are over 1 million users and growing fast this stepping outside the “walled gardens” It's time to take a step away and mastodon is right in many ways for this step. list of instances with a physical presents at the event: https://campaign.openworlds.info https://joinmastodon.org

Snowden's app sounds quite good for dealing with the evil maids. Also suitable for situations where the threat is someone you know (over-zealous parent, abusive partner, nosy boss, etc) https://social.freedombone.net/url/67621

@artsyhonker Yes, you could have a situation where users want to leave but can't because it would decrease their income.

In light of the recent stuff about reciprocation, one possible campaign which could be started in 2018 would be something like "payback the content creators".

The silo companies obviously make massive profits out of the content created by users, but users typically get no financial remuneration for their labor. If a company like Facebook could be pressured into making some payouts then this would eat into their profits and hit Zuckerperson where it hurts.

On the other hand maybe this would be considered a smart move for the silos since it could lock users in even more effectively.

Yeah, and their (to paraphrase) "surveillance capitalism is the only way to serve the unfortunate" take is, to use their word, "daft".

They refer to a value exchange, ignoring huge power and pricing informational asymmetries that undermine the fairness in the exchange.

@kaniini I agree with Graeber that we live in a vastly over-credentialized bureacratic society, and that the left typically has no critique of this.

observation: somebody who has to constantly remind others of their credentials likely has no useful skills or recent knowledge related to said credentials.

downplay the credentials, it's not the important part of higher education. learning new things and building a social network are the important parts.
