You don't have to use Google Play on your Android phone.

There's a free open alternative app store called F-Droid, which is much more privacy-friendly, and which you can install yourself relatively easily.

Apparently human staff at Amazon Alexa listen to what people say, even very intimate things (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-10/is-anyone-listening-to-you-on-alexa-a-global-team-reviews-audio).

Alexa uploads your speech to be analysed on Amazon's servers. Siri, Cortana, Bixby etc also do this.

A better alternative is Snips, which doesn't upload your voice anywhere:

You install it on a Raspberry Pi, and access it directly or from your other devices.

It does prove the usefulness of #federation that through all the #Matrix outage, my account was not affected at all. Most of the people I chat to are on other servers than the one affected.

Skype is owned by Microsoft and all its calls pass through MS servers. No one knows what MS does with the data it gathers.

Jami is a free open alternative with no servers at all, calls connect directly between users. It's very easy to use, and a good privacy-friendly replacement for Skype.
