    Time to announce this plan: I am working on a redesign of the joinmastodon.org server picker. I am also planning to switch out the data source from instances.social to my own API. The main reason for this is the addition of a new guarantee that I would be able to give when linking to servers from joinmastodon.org: That those servers would meet certain standards and enforce some basic rules of conduct.

    Below is a screenshot with old, uncurated data as placeholder.

    Wow. On the one hand it seems like just yesterday, but on the other it feels like a *lot* has happened since then.

    Thank you for all the suggestions and feedback, and thank you to those who make #Alternatives that give us back our privacy. You are all heroes πŸ‘

    p.s. Just to make clear: the idea isn't to clone switching.social in other languages.

    The idea is to have resources in other languages that help people. The resources listed may depend on what is available in your language (for example Framasoft has many French-only resources).

    Also, if you disagree with my approach/style but would like to use material from switching.social, that's also fine.

    The idea of the CC By-SA licence is to allow forking of content to create new works.

    There's now a French version of switching.social at:

    https://switching.geber.ga

    It's still a work in progress so please do give feedback to its maintainer @albakham

    Also, @marianom is working on an Italian version at:

    https://visika.github.io/it.switching.social/

    https://switching.social is licensed under Creative Commons By-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/), so if you want to create your own version of the site (or use it in derivative works) that's absolutely fine πŸ‘

    Try clicking on "Select...", type in a hashtag and wait a bit, it should suggest hashtags instead of "no options".

    By the way, on my instance it says ""Enter hashtags..." instead of "Select...", maybe your instance is customised in some way?

    In case you missed it, you can follow people across the Fediverse even if you're using a different kind of site.

    For example, here's a PixelFed account:

    @earth

    ...here's a PeerTube account...

    @documentaries

    ...here's a WriteFreely account...

    @carbontwelve

    ...here's a Plume account...

    @PlumeDev

    ...here's a Friendica account...

    @hypolite

    ...and you can follow all of them from Mastodon.

    Just click on the @ link to see their profile, and then click on Follow.

    In case you missed it, privacy-friendly laptop maker Purism has launched its own range of open online services:

    https://librem.one

    You can follow Purism on their new account at:

    @purism

    Librem One's services use open standards so that users aren't locked in. For example, Librem Social is a Mastodon instance and part of the Fediverse.

    Technically this is nothing new, but it's nice to see all-in-one offers for those who prefer bundles. Non-techies may find Librem One more approachable.

    Managed hosting is when you own and run a site, but the hosting company does the behind-the-scenes tech stuff like installation and updates.

    There's a new indie company called Spacebear offering #PixelFed and #PeerTube managed hosting:

    https://app.spacebear.ee

    You can follow them at @tklk

    There's also a well-established company called Masto.host offering #Mastodon managed hosting:

    #Mobilizon is an upcoming free open event organising platform, which will federate through ActivityPub (so it will work on the Fediverse).

    It's not ready yet, but you can find out more, including a development timetable, on the official website:

    https://joinmobilizon.org/en/

    You can follow the official account at:

    @mobilizon

    The source code is at:

    https://framagit.org/framasoft/mobilizon/

    It's being developed by free software advocates @Framasoft , who make #PeerTube and lots of other cool stuff.

    The web browser Brave is marketed as a privacy-friendly ad-free alternative, but that's pretty disingenuous.

    Brave exists not to protect privacy, but to make money from selling ads.

    Brave is a commercial company funded by venture capital. Its business model is selling advertising and cryptocurrency investment.

    One of Brave's owners is Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. Thiel is also the head of Palantir (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir_Technologies) and on the board of Facebook.

    I do not recommend using Brave.
