Maybe I should change my avatar, I'm reading up on intuistionistic logic (i.e. attempt to grok coq, # umpteen).

@purplehippo Well that people stay with Github is pretty much a given but for MS to make money on the deal they'd need to funnel people into their own ecosystem, probably Azure (seems to be the profit center of MS these days) and I fail to see how they can do that to such an extent that it makes the deal worth it. The private projects are dangerous for MS to look at, they have a lot of lawyers but if someone can prove they committed copyright infringement that would get very expensive very quickly.
-
@6gain Yeah, but they could easily get that by paying Github some money. Most of it is probably already existing APIs.
-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla With usually an added bonus of soaking up personal data. I can accept a lot of not-too-bad DRM, but if a game requires an online account it's an automatic no-buy for me.
-
I'm still wondering why Github is worth 7.5 billion to MS. I mean, I see some value in making it really easy for FOSS developers to integrate with the MS ecosystem (e.g. a "deploy this shit to Azure" button) and the social graph has some value (though GDPR and the likes will seriously limit how far they can abuse it) but is that really worth billions? And lets not forget that MS is probably the only company besides Oracle that can actually ruin Github by overreach, the convenience of Github is so strong that people will eat a lot of shit just to keep using it but the traditional animosity towards MS would probably drive enough projects off Github to kill the attraction if they abuse their position.

This Torvalds quote doesn't just work for the C standard:
"I've said this before, and I'll say it again: a standards paper is
just so much toilet paper when it conflicts with reality. It has
absolutely _zero_ relevance. In fact, I'll take real toilet paper over
standards any day, because at least that way I won't have splinters
and ink up my arse."

Oh the joy of a 5Mb/s connection when downloading modern games.
-
It never ceases to amaze me how much the Godot editor folks manage to put in to only a 22MB download.

So I just got Xenonauts, it was a freebie. Have to say, compared to my only reference X-Com Apocalypse (which I mainly got because I got gifted it long ago on CD and couldn't get it to run back then) it's a lot more welcoming. I got my ass kicked by hidden monsters in a corner one square away killing my soldiers, but at least the interface is not overwhelming and there's less of a "what the hell am I doing here" factor. And of course I very much approve of giveaways. It's an obvious marketing play for Xenonauts 2 but it's a consumer friendly advertising tactic rather than the usual bullshit barrage that's advertising (sorry, games journalism).

@maiyannah Gitlab has the advantage that you can import projects from the silo to a private instance so there's less lock-in.
-
Article: MS and Github have held acquisition talks. Can I hope it works out? It's a match made in heaven culturally (MS is _heavily_ into CoCs) and if anyone can cure FOSS from its Github addiction it's MS.
-
@maiyannah Honestly, between Google and the Pentagon I expect the latter to have a better grasp of ethics.

Trump goes trade war on Europe. Eh, the EU sucks monkey balls at a lot of thing but one thing it's really really good at is shafting other countries economically and it doesn't necessarily hold a lot of reverence for the power of friendship (memento Graecia).
-
So, I'm a bit confused now. Is Trump now actually slapping trade sanctions on Can, EU and Mex while not (yet) doing so on China?
-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla Yeah, they want a cheat mode for life. :P
-
@gameragodzilla @maiyannah You're starting to understand the post-modern concept of communication. Words have no fixed meaning, they mean what the listener wants them to hear, based on their opinion of the speaker. The logical endgame is that you cannot defend yourself from any accusation for every single word you could speak would convict you.
-
@camoceltic @maiyannah @mangeurdenuage Well that makes sense, only show stuff like this to the idiots^Wwhales willing to pay for it.
-
@maiyannah @mangeurdenuage I /hope/ this is about the cost of _development_ and not the price for buying the DLC...

Perhaps it's wrong to think of FOSS meritocracy as assigning value. It's really more about trust. Do I trust that acting on the advice of this individual will make the code better abd not worse?
