@halani Gotta make sure that mouse isn't going anywhere.

From the category of "oh yeah, this is MS": exceptions thrown in SQL Server when executing insert statements from an SQL script when the script contains a string containing a left or right brace, probably because a call to some tracing mechanism tries to interpret it as a format string. (And for the record, no, it was not my idea to go for SQL Server.)

@camoceltic Still feels a bit high to me, but that's modern software for you.

@bob @maiyannah Would be interesting though what would happen with the trademark. As I recall Linus owns that personally so I wonder if LF had him sign over perpetuate usage rights as a condition of employment, otherwise he has a very big stick to beat them with if he so desires.
-
@maiyannah Given the average attitude of a slashdotter it would seem surprising if there isn't a huge thread about it, yes.
-
@maiyannah @purplehippo In that case can we please ship off all the lefty loonies here to NK so they can purify them? :P

Somehow I'm reminded of that level in Dawn of War Soulstorm where you fight the Sisters of Battle and they have that really annoying Living Saint that can only be killed after killing all of her shrines, which you can only do if she's not near a shrines. Some people these days have a similar mentality as the Sisters of Battle.
-
@purplehippo @maiyannah Now, now, no need to be sexist. There's plenty of female feminists doing the same thing (only they get even more brownie points for "can't be wrong"). :P

Had "fun" with .NET today, trying to check if two trees of objects are equal after a serialization roundtrip. Obviously they weren't because forgot that List<T>.Equals() does not call Equals() on the elements of the list but only does reference equality (i.e. the kind that's both fast and rarely what you want). The right one is an extension method called SequenceEqual. Seriously, in some respects Haskell is just godly: "deriving (Eq)", no need for code generation to create equals methods that will subtly break if you add fields and forget to add them.
-
@purplehippo @maiyannah And if they do they'll put the usual spin of it as a good thing that only regulates common sense, they're more predictable in their praise than North Korean news anchors.
-
@maiyannah A male ally of feminists always strikes me as someone who'd have power fantasies while groveling before a BSDM mistress and being fscked in the read with a cactus wrapped in sandpaper, only more submissive and less honest.
-
@maiyannah Yeah, that's exactly the quote I was thinking of.
-
At this rate OpenBSD is going to be the last holdout.

Oh fuck, Linux is now under Contributor Covenant. Is this what the Republic grunts felt like when Anakin went full Darth Vader?
-
@camoceltic Oh, didn't know about dmix, though it figures there was a way before Lennart descended from the heavens with his holy solution (/s). Yeah, from a quick search on the internet it seems the main benefit of PA is that it's designed to work out of the box while ALSA requires some manual configuration. But if you're going Gentoo anyway you're clearly ok with walking through a cactus field of configuration so I don't really see any benefit of PA in that particular distro. Plus it might be easier to get Jack working.
-
@camoceltic The thing with PulseAudio is, it's not just a piece of shit, it's a piece of shit solving problems caused by other pieces of shit. In particular the main benefit of PA (when it works) is that it allows multiple audio sources to work at the same time, which is kind of expected but not at all how Linux audio works at a low level. So if you're having problems in that area you might be better of learning the inner arcana of PulseAudio than learning the arcana of ALSA.
-
@macgirvin You're being optimistic sir. The toxic people do not need to be sent, they will arrive of their own accord.
-
@camoceltic IIRC ALSA is like SCSI, it may involve animal sacrifices.
-
@purplehippo Can you imagine Valve ever acquiring Blizzard? The launch delays would be epic.

@purplehippo @moonman Tool of patriarchical oppression?
