MostAmazingWriterEverTM is being very mature about this situation, it makes him sound very trustworthy indeed. /s

"Avellone's writing is like if a rock band like ACDC or something is at a concert playing their usual hits and out of nowhere the lead drummer pulls out like a harp or a clarinet and just starts playing in the middle of a song.
The drummer might be really REALLY good at playing that clarinet but no matter what it clashes with everything else that's going on and sticks out like a sore thumb, making it a mess. The rest of the band may try to go along with it at first, then try to play around it, but eventually they just give up and go backstage.
Then it's just some jackass playing a three hour clarinet solo at a rock concert you payed like 40-60ish dollars to go see.
What a pain in the neck it must be to work with that drummer.."
I appreciate this comment on the Obsidian forums. (While also thinking Avellone's writing is not good)

Hey.
Hi.
@maiyannah is lovely and she's a wonderful wifey, and I adore her.
-
I liked Pillars of Eternity.
Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire. Is that. Minus Avellone. Plus pirates.
Up my street, then.
-
@maiyannah @gameragodzilla
Very much so.
(Also hence my postings complaining about the Pillars comp he wrote in another thread, to prove the point further :P)

If the only reason you would ever keep a companion around, is because of metagaming. That companion is horrendously done.
And that's Durance, ladies and gents.
-
One of the companions Avellone wrote in Pillars, is a dirty old man, who is perverted, racist and misogynistic.
The only way to complete his quest and discover his story, is to repeatedly camp with him in the party. Over and over til it triggers. You have to get two triggers. Then take him along to a specific main quest. Otherwise you can't complete it.
The end of his quest, and that bit of story, is interesting enough. But it's far more about his god, than the character himself.
So to recap. Awful deliberately shitty character. Who you -have- to keep around for 90% of the game to complete his quest, and the only interesting thing about him is more about his god, so could have been achieved with literally any other type of character who follows that god.
Oh and the cut content Avellone bitched so much about? He wanted that character to have raped the other companion he wrote, in the past.
I'm not even kidding, that's Durance. A companion he wrote, that people laud. WHY.

@maiyannah
Most of the games of Obsidians I've liked ain't Avellone related much, is probs why, for me at least. As in, he didn't work on them, or he did but I don't like his parts of them.
Can definitely see your point tho, there is a large chunk of Obsidian fans that just latch on to a specific writer.
-
Pathfinder Kingmaker interested me lots, but the fact that Avellone was a human Kickstarter for it (again) has made me lose a -lot- of that.
-
The stuff that got cut out between the two companions was revealed by him, and it honestly makes their stories -worse- so good riddance to that.
-
Hell one of the foremost complaints about the first Pillars is it being too 'wordy' in places.
To which Avellone wrote the two wordiest companions by a long shot, in the game. (Who are both awful by the way)
Then publicly bitched about the fact that a large chunk of the story about the companions had been cut.
Like it not being cut would have made them better. (It would not have)

@maiyannah
He's one of those people I just...really don't 'get' the popularity for.
I tend to like obsidian games in general (know we disagree there) but Avellone's writing, to me, has always been the weakest stuff in it.
Nothing against the guy personally (well ...a bit against the guy admittedly cos of the way he's conducted himself during this drama, whether he's right or wrong) but none of his writing has ever stood out to me in a good way, when it has stood out, it's stood out in a "shut up for a moment" way.
-
@maiyannah
Makes sense.
-
@maiyannah
Jus' the Avellone thing, they're one of the few places (aside from Obsidian forums, but you'd expect some bias there for obvious reasons) that are taking it with a pinch of salt. For the most part anyways.
Where all the other places are like "GODS THATS HORRIBLE AND HE WOULD NEVER LIE OR BE BIASED IN ANY WAY"
-
When r/games are the ones being logical and fairly unbiased about something, you know it's a weird situation.
-
@maiyannah
Oh gods. How'd that happen hon?
-
@maiyannah
I'll xmpp ya the base details <3

I might delete this and just end up ranting about the whole thing >.> I can be fickle like that. But will see.
