@alva Nothing. Facetious lang classes are taught in upper grades with antiquated pedagogy. Americans tend to be quite suspicious of other languages, so often object to children learning (when it would be both sensible and cognitively advantageous). The nativist anxieties and cultural tenuousness often conglomerate superficial shibboleths. Speaking proper ‘Murican is often a prerequisite for privilege as much as race. So likely “English” class fills the time (and notably poorly).

@wilbr @asherah Thanks. This was interesting and a bit of a shock to me. As “ferengi” is literally a pejorative term for Europeans derived from Franks (French Crusader) in Lingua Franca, which spread throughout South Asia, I had read the Star Trek Ferengi as being a mercantile and capitalist satire rather than anti-Jewish. Of course as with all things polysemic, they may be both.

@salixlucida I love to send and receive postcards. But few reciprocate. Email doesn’t cut it. And instantly forgettable snapshots don’t do. McLuhan right again.
