@rek2 you left out #Jami, which has a much more consistent #UX across platforms than #Tox (eg none of the Tox mobile apps I've tried support group chat). You also left out #BigBlueButton, which I keep hearing is much less of a resource hog on the server-side than #JitsiMeet, and I can confirm JM is a massive resource hog on the client-side. I haven't used #Discord but I've heard #Riot (#Matrix client) is a pretty good substitute?

Ever been in a situation in an online groups where every reply to another group member results in longer and more complicated replies from them, requiring further replies from you asking for clarification that you never seem to get? Did you notice it derailing a group conversation rather than contributing to it? If so, that person is prioritizing attention over effective communication, and is best ignored.

If you want to understand the challenge of explaining ethical and political issues in digital tech to a non-technical audience, consider that most people I ask still don't know the difference between the net and the web.

One of the more unpleasant characteristics of Mastodon is the number of people writing posts saying "don't argue with me or comment on what I said for XX reasons" It's a public forum. If you don't want anyone to comment, challenge your position, give advice or ask questions then I strongly suggest you DON'T POST THOSE OPINIONS PUBLICLY.

    > Those providers are taking it away from me.

No, as I explained in the last post, they're buying it from me (non-exclusively), for far more than I call sell it for myself. The long game would be for the streaming services to start buying up cinema chains while they are devalued by the current hiccup. Then they have both online and offline distribution for their original content.

@stevefoerster same. Although I notice this sort of things (like #Ello) tends to take off in particular (in-person) social circles, so anyone outside those circles is unlikely to know any users, unless and until it spreads beyond them.

@wolf480pl I think it's more that kiwis only book in advance at the times cinemas wouldn't need to cancel screenings (new releases, peak times etc). It's not unusual here to buy movie tickets on the day, even in the last 15 minutes before the movie starts. If cinemas cancelled screenings just before they were supposed to start, the savings wouldn't be worth the cost in lost customer goodwill.

β€œ'Questions to Ask' ... from multiple ethical traditions ...

    – Would I be happy for this decision to be on the public record?
    – What would happen if everybody did this?
    – How would I like it if someone did this to me?
    – Will the proposed course of action bring about a good result?
    – What will the proposed course of action do to my character or the character of my organization?
    – Is the proposed course of action consistent with my espoused values and principles?"

"If the world dies by fire, it will be in part due to cloud compute sales to the oil and gas industry by the big three cloud service providers: #Amazon, #Microsoft, #Google ... every sale of cloud technology into the #oil and #gas sector lowers the underlying cost structure of those industries, making them more cost-competitive against #wind and #solar.

This is unconscionable. No wonder they're also funding #ClimateChange "skeptic" propaganda projects.

"With the recent spate of Google firings of LGBTQ employees for their activism, including Laurence Berland, Rebecca Rivers, Sophie Waldman, and Kathryn Spiers, I see far too many similarities to what we experienced in the PCUSA twenty years ago."

Obviously I agree that Goggle firing people for gay rights activism is abhorrent. But firing people for not being woke enough is equally abhorrent *for the same reasons*. Employers must not be allowed to control belief.

Just watched the first episode of a #UK #SciFi series called #TheFeed. Imagine a whole series based off that episode of #BlackMirror where everyone has a chip recording their memories, and giving them a #HUD they can control with their thoughts. The characters are well written and the performances are natural and engaging. I'm intrigued enough to keep watching.

    3. The lion's share of x86 PCs are not used for gaming, it's now a specialized subset served mainly by custom desktop rigs. Also, games target Windows because it's common, not because it's a good gaming OS. Once cheaper, better GNU/Linux/ Risk-V PCs become more common than Windows rubbish, gaming will migrate with everything else.
