    ... and in #GoodNews, not every #virus is bad for us.

    "One particular area of interest is the triggering of genes from viruses integrated in our own genetic material. These endogenous viruses make up some 8 percent of our genetic material. Originally, they were thought to be nothing more than junk pieces of evolutionary history. But we now know they have a variety of functions"

      Not All Viruses Are Enemies
      from Popular Science
      We tend to think of viruses as pathogens but they are not all out to harm us. Some are symbiotic. Now a researcher has stated the case for viruses as friends.

    @wizzwizz4 the standard copyrightist apologia goes like this. With print books, libraries have to buy a copy from the publisher approved by the author, and can only lend it out to one person at a time. So they ought to do the same with #eBooks, or negotiate a copyright licence that allows them to do the unrestricted lending the #InternetArchive is now doing (one that presumably costs much more per book).

    Accusing a popular protest movement of engaging in terrorist attacks is a timeworn state strategy for trying to corrode public support for the movement, and engineer splits between its moderate and radical factions:

    @bamfic
    > ISTR Pleroma adding AP C2S support

    That would be great. Then the devs of third-party apps would have a reason to implement it alongside the Mastodon API, and if that happened, more AP servers would have a greater motivation to implement it too.

    @bamfic totally agree. The underlying problem in medical tech is pretty much the same as in digital tech. Which suggests that the solution is the same, research and development commons, built collaboratively by #PlatformCooperatives, NGOs, and #SocialEnterprises, which allow the regulatory burdens to be widely shared. A lot of regulatory processes could be carried out in stages, throughout open development, instead of being a bottleneck at the end.

    @bamfic following this analysis:
    https://davelane.nz/tech-marketing-listen-ignore-research

    ... the heavy marketing suggests the patent treadmill pushes their development priorities towards products that are the most saleable, and away from the products that are the most necessary.

    @bamfic probably by getting rid of most marketing of drugs and other medical products? A number of papers have been published indicating that pharmaceutical companies spend more on marketing than on medical research:

    @bamfic you could try asking at socialhub.activitypub.rocks ?
    All fediverse #S2C implementations I'm aware of (including #Pleroma AFAIK) follow the #Mastodon API, not the AP S2C spec.

    @bamfic if the entire economy of a region depends on creating artificial scarcity in life-saving products, it deserves nothing less than collapsing into a smouldering crater. The sooner the better. There are definitely better uses for the time and skills of most people currently employed in those industries.

    If you're using proprietary software services (i.e. most of those advertised to you, and household names), even if they aren't surveilling you now (they probably are), they will be in the future, guaranteed. Best thing to do is look beyond the marketing now. There are better solutions available, and, amazingly, they cost less, too. https://tech.oeru.org/working-home - and if you want to understand the marketing issue: https://davelane.nz/marketing
